Abigail Adams writes to Cotton Tufts, 1787 January 16, instructing him to burn some letters and to forward a picture to Margaret Smith. William Smith Shaw, nephew and private secretary to John Adams writes to the latter's son Thomas concerning events in the closing weeks of Adam's administration. Topics discussed are the Midnight judges, the Sedition Act of 1798, the election of 1800, and the peace treaty with France in 1800 and ambassador Rufus King's report concerning its effect on Anglo-American relations. Also bills currently before Congress on the government of the District of Columbia, a monument to George Washington, the current state of Federalist party politics, Friderich Gentz's pamphlet, John Marshall, and Thomas Jefferson. A few personal notes are included.

The Linnaean Society (1814-1823) was established in Boston by a group of gentlemen wishing to spark public interest in natural science; members conducted scientific inquiries and gathered specimens to be exhibited. This small group of papers (letters and receipts), presumably collected by William Smith Shaw, vice-president of the Society, records the financial difficulties which led to the resignation of the treasurer, Octavius Pickering, and, ultimately, to the dissolution of the society.

Encompassing the Smith-Townsend Family Papers and the Smith-Townsend Family Papers II, the interrelated family papers contain those of Rev. Isaac Smith (1749-1829), including his book of memoranda on sermons preached by Rev. Samuel Cooper and others in Boston (1764), notes (of mileage, etc.) on a voyage to Portsmouth, N.H. (1765), and correspondence with him as a loyalist in exile in England during the Revolution. The collection also contains papers documenting the commercial activities of Boston merchant William Smith (1755-1816) and his son Thomas Carter Smith, a merchant seaman; letters of Abigail (Smith) Adams, wife of John Adams, written to her uncle Isaac Smith (1719-1787) and her cousin William (1755-1816), including letters to 1800 from Philadelphia on current politics; papers of Dr. David Townsend, including his cut-slip autograph collection, and his son Solomon D. Townsend. (Cont'd) The papers also include recipe books (begun in 1738); an undated commonplace-book of poetry kept by Frances B. (Mrs. Thomas C.) Smith; an unidentified meteorological journal (1818); and a scrapbook kept by Elizabeth H. Smith begun in 1863 containing genealogical notes and charts, photographs, and other family memorabilia. This collection contains letters by many members of the Adams family, including Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886) [9 letters], John Adams (1735-1826) [11 letters], John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) [65 letters], and Thomas Boylston Adams (1772-1832) [61 letters]. Many letters are addressed to William Smith Shaw (1778-1826), librarian of the Boston Athenaeum and the Massachusetts Historical Society, and an incorporator of the American Antiquarian Society. He also served as personal secretary to John Adams during the latter's term as President. There is a commonplace book dated 1755, and evidently misattributed to John Adams. Three early deeds, dated 1698, 1705, and 1709, relate to properties owned by the Adams family on the Boston waterfront. There are typescripts of some of these letters in a bound notebook.

Correspondence and memoir of Hannah Adams, author and historian. The bulk of the collection consists of her corespondence with William S. Shaw, lawyer and librarian at the Boston Athenaeum; James Savage; historian and geographer Rev. Jedidiah Morse; and his associate Rev. Elijah Parish. Adams was involved in a long dispute with Morse over the competing publication of their histories of New England. Most of the letters relate to this dispute. Some are apparently contemporary handwritten copies. The memoir may be a draft of Adams' A Memoir of Miss Hannah Adams (1832).

Included are the original prospectus of the Anthology Reading Room, terms of subscription to the institution, the Act of Incorporation, the Boston Athenaeum original notice and a receipt of a payment on share. Series 2 is a typescript copy of Robert Hallowell Gardiner's "The Anthology Club, "excerpted from his "Reminiscences." Series 3 contains two copies of the Anthology Reading Room catalog, published January 1, 1807. The catalog documents the rules and regulations of the instutute and its Trustees, as well as a list of the periodicals ordered for the Anthology, serparated by country.
