Manuscript of a modified and expanded version of the 1723 edition of Tristram Risdon's Chorographical description ... with its additions incorporated in the main part of the text. Index of places on p. 179. Also, a sermon; the texts used by Mr. Follet and others for their sermons, 1735-1742; the will of Charles Harris of Ilfracombe, 1743; a life of Stephen Duck and several of his poems; Mr. Mason's Spiritual songs, Penitential cries and several other poems; and reasons for nonconformity, ca. 1725-ca. 1750. "Written" by Thomas Harris of Ilfracombe (Olfordcombe), Devon. He appears to have been a member of a nonconformist sect.

A 1736 letter written by the "Thresher-Poet" Stephen Duck to Henry Temple, 1st Lord Palmerston, one of his patrons. This letter celebrates Palmerston for his generosity and thanks him for giving money towards a "thresher's feast" in Duck's honor in his native village of Charlton. Duck thanks Palmerston not just on behalf of the village's inhabitants, but also because Palmerston's funding of the feast will help to make Duck immortal, "at least in Wiltshire."

Joseph Spence papers, 1649-1859, 1739-1768

Title: Joseph Spence papers 1649-1859 1739-1768

The papers include correspondence, personal papers, notes and memoranda, and related papers. Much of the material concerns Spence's Anecdotes, including manuscripts of his notes on conversations with Alexander Pope, memoranda on Stephen Duck and other authors, and notes on Spence's reading. There are also extensive notes on English gardens, shorter writings by Spence, and drafts of works which appeared in his Moralities (1753, under the pseudonym of Sir Harry Beaumont). The correspondence principally concerns personal and business matters, including the settlement of Spence's estate. Series VIII, Derby Anecdotes (Oversize) contains a large paper extra-illustrated set of the Anecdotes (1820) with autograph documents bound in,including autographs of Eustace Budgell, Colley Cibber, William Congreve, George II, Charles Montagu, Earl of Halifax, David Mallet, Alexander Pope, Sir William Trumbull, and Joseph Warton.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of copies of verse extracts from Paradise Lost by John Milton and New Year's Ode by Colley Cibber, and four poems by Stephen Duck: The Shunamite; The Thresher's Labour; On Poverty; and a verse epistle to Alured Clarke. At one end of the volume is a series of verses with the heading "Commendment in young beginners is very commendable," and signed "Anne Watkins. January."

Mid-eighteenth century commonplace book containing poems, cookery recipes, medical home remedies and notes on natural history and physics. Poems include John Hughes's "Ode to the creator of the world," Isaac Watts's "Stanzas to my Lady Sutherland," Pope's "Universal prayer," and the traditional ballad of Chevy Chase, as well as many other works by prominent poets, such as Anne Finch, Lord Orrery and Joseph Addison. The compiler gathered many of these poems from contemporary periodicals such as the Daily gazetteer, Gloucester journal and Gentleman's magazine. The volume contains many entries made at least partially in short-hand.

Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of copies of 20 letters from Alured Clarke to Charlotte, Lady Sundon, followed by copies of 4 letters to her from Lord John Hervey adn one letter from an unsigned hand. Many of the letters from Clarke concern his patronage of the poet Stephen Duck, in which he discusses his anxiety about exposing Duck to the cruelty of Alexander Pope and "the Dunciad Club," his negotiations with various booksellers and publishers on Duck's behalf, and his high hopes for Duck's poetry after the death of Duck's wife. He also describes books on religion, history, and moral philosophy that he has read; witnesses a presentation of "Indians" to the Queen; and imparts various religious and political news, including Quaker activities. The letters from Hervey consist primarily of descriptions of his own routine social activities as well as those of such notables as the King, Queen, and Duke of Grafton, though he also writes with surprise that Stanislaus has been chosen King of Poland and reports that Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop of Salisbury, is on the brink of being promoted to the bishopric of Winchester, despite his disagreements with Sir Robert Walpole. An unsigned letter dated 1734, sent "by a private hand," discusses the controversial nomination of Thomas Rundle to the see of Gloucester.

Holdings include biblical commentaries; John Dryden's plays; poems by Stephen Duck; numerous collections of prints and drawings, including William Hogarth's Collection of Prints and Darly's Collection of Caricatures; dictionaries in English, Italian, and French; Thomas Betterton's History of the English stage; and Horace Walpole's History of the royal and noble authors. The manuscript also includes several collections of musical works, including Cervetto's 6 Solos for the violincello and bass.
