Title: James J. White Letters, 1860-1861

James Jones White (1828-1893) was a captain in the 4th Virginia Infantry Regiment of the army of the Confederate States of America. The collection includes letters from James Jones White to his wife Mary, chiefly written in Virginia early in the Civil War. White wrote of camp life, military duties, troop movements, the battles of First Bull Run and Harpers Ferry, and the Christian character of General Stonewall Jackson. Also included is one letter written from White Sulphur Springs, Va., in 1860.

Includes ALS and typed copies of Barclay's letters to his family in Lexington, Virginia during the Civil War. The letters include: information about the activities of the Liberty Hall Volunteers of the Stonewall Brigade in major battles within Virginia; accounts of life in Confederate camp; information about food, clothing, diseases, religious services, attractive women, and deaths of friends while serving with the Volunteers; and accounts of his life as a Union prisoner at Fort Delaware.
