Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, a 1839 graduate of Harvard Law School, was a judge of the Court of Common Pleas (1849-1855), associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (1859-1869), served as U.S. Attorney General (1869-1870) and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1873-1875).
American jurist.
A noted jurist, U.S. Congressman and resident of Concord, Mass. U.S. Attorney General in President Grant's administration, 1869-1870. E.R. Hoar was born in Concord, Feb. 21, 1816, the son of Samuel and Sarah Sherman Hoar. His siblings included Elizabeth Sherman Hoar and George Frisbie Hoar. A graduate of Harvard College in 1835, and Harvard Law School in 1839, he married Caroline Downes Brooks in 1840. He was an influential member of several clubs and organizations, including the American Unitarian Association, the Saturday Club, and the Social Circle in Concord. He died Jan. 31, 1895.
American politician and lawyer.
U.S. attorney general, U.S. representative from Masschusetts, and jurist.
American judge and attorney general.
Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar and William Maxwell Evarts were among the most distinguished attorneys of the mid-19th century, both rising to the position of Attorney-General. Hoar (1816-1895), was born in Concord, Mass., the son of Samuel Hoar and Sarah Sherman. An 1835 graduate of Harvard (Law, 1839), he entered into public life during the waning years of the Whig Party. A strong antislavery man, Hoar left the Whigs to joined the Free Soil Party in 1848, and ultimately became a Republican. He was appointed a judge of common pleas in 1849, resumed private law practice in 1855, and from 1859 to 1869 was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. He became Attorney-General under Ulysses S. Grant in 1869, but when nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court in 1870, his insistence that circuit court positions be filled on merit rather than patronage led to his rejection in the Senate. He served a single term in Congress, 1873-75, then retired to Concord. He married Caroline Downes Brooks in 1840 and they had seven children.
Hoar's first cousin, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), was the son of Jeremiah and Mehitabel (Sherman) Barnes Evarts. Born in Boston, he graduated from Yale in 1837, was admitted to the New York bar in 1841, and in 1843, married Helen Minerva Wardner of Windsor, Vt. They had twelve children. A Whig in politics, Evarts supported the legality of the Fugitive Slave Act (1850), but in 1855, gave one-quarter of his assets to the Emigrant Aid Company, an abolitionist cause. In 1860 he chaired the New York delegation to the Republican national convention, but was defeated by Ira Harris for a senate seat from New York in 1861. He was twice sent to England on diplomatic missions, 1863-64, seeking to stop the building and equipping of Confederate naval vessels. His superb defense of Andrew Johnson during the 1868 impeachment trial led to his appointment as Attorney-General which position he held through the end of Johnson's administration. Among his other famous courtroom trials were his defense of Henry Ward Becher in Tilton vs. Beecher (1875) and his counsel for the Republican Party in the Hayes vs. Tilden election dispute (1877). He died in New York City.

Evarts family papers, 1753-1960 (bulk 1798-1901)
Title:
Evarts family papers 1753-1960
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial material, congressional papers, family memorabilia, and other papers of various members of the Evarts family of Vermont, Boston, and New York. The principal figures, however, are Jeremiah Evarts (1781-1831), author, editor, lawyer, and philanthropist, and his son, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), lawyer and statesman. The papers of Jeremiah Evarts relate to his work and writings on Congregational orthodoxy, his travels for the American Board of Foreign Missions, and his efforts on behalf of American Indians. His correspondents include family members, fellow members of the Yale Class of 1802, and many well-known clergymen, lawyers, statesmen, and missionaries.

Hawthorne family. Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
Title:
Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
The papers afford glimpses into the social and private lives of some of the Hawthorne family. Like others of her time and circumstances, Sophia Hawthorne devoted generous amounts of time to correspondence and journal-keeping; her surviving papers provide a rich reflection of life in 19th-century Concord, in Cuba, and later in England and Europe during Hawthorne's tenure as Consul at Liverpool. Included are letters, verse, journals, and notes relating to the family and milieu of Nathaniel Hawthorne and of the men and women of the American literary renaissance and of the Transcendentalist movement. Virtually all of the letters of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop were written to Clifford Smyth, a literary editor and historian, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix, Rose's niece; Rose dearly loved Beatrix and her family. Sent from Rosary Hill Home between 1913 and 1926, the year Rose died, the letters illustrate some of the familial concerns of Rose, who was by then Mother Alphonsa: she was for example, worried about her brother, Julian, and she remained committed to preserving her parents' memory. Also included are circa 450 pages of holograph manuscripts which, though undated, can be placed as pre-1900. The manuscripts consist of complete drafts of short stories, verse, and substantial fragments of several novels. These manuscripts seem not to have been previously published. Also present are two other items of interest: a copybook dated 1858, when Rose was seven, with penmanship exercises and numerous poems, and a holograph journal from 1873, when she was 22 years old. Of Julian Hawthorne's letters, almost all were written to Julian's son-in-law, Clifford Smyth, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix (Julian's daughter). Three items are childhood notes, written in pencil, two to Julian's aunt Elizabeth Palmer Peabody; the other to his maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Peabody. Also included are Hawthorne family memorabilia and photographs, and manuscript papers of actress Anna Cora Mowatt.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Shaw family. Letters received, 1859-1940.
Title:
Letters received, 1859-1940.
The majority of letters in the collection were received by Sarah Blake Sturgis Shaw and her daughter, Josephine Shaw Lowell. Many of the letters received by Sarah are condolences for the death of her son, Robert in 1863. A few letters to Sarah, concerning the abolitionist movement, also reflect the political situation at that time. Letters received by Josephine from Theodore Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Grover Cleveland all reflect Lowell's participation in the anti-Imperialist movement and its effect on the Philippines. Other letters in the collection include: from Oliver Wendell Holmes to Sarah regarding song lyrics; two letters from sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens regarding the Boston monument to Robert Gould Shaw; one personal letter from William James to Josephine; and two personal letters from Henry James to Josephine and her daughter, Lotta. Other correspondents and recipients include: Charles Russell Lowell (Josephine's husband) to Charles Sumner; Charles Russell Lowell to General Francis C. Barlow (Charles' brother-in-law, married to Ellen Shaw); Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar (Attorney General under Grant) to Francis C. Barlow; Grover Cleveland, Henry James and Woodrow Wilson to Ellen Barlow; W. Somerset Maughan to R.S. Barlow (Francis and Ellen's son). A carte de visite of Grover Cleveland, signed and the passport of Francis C. Barlow are also included.

Title:
Papers, 1794-1901, bulk: 1831-1877.
Correspondence, diaries, and other papers of Boston lawyer George Bemis. Building his reputation in part through his assistance to the prosecution in the trial of Harvard professor John W. Webster for the murder of George Parkman, Bemis later became an authority in international law. He assisted the U.S. government in pursuing the Alabama Claims against Great Britain after the Civil War. Bemis's early correspondence is mainly with his Harvard classmates Ebenezer R. Hoar and Frederick Eustis; with Harvard professors, including President Josiah Quincy; and with his siblings Seth, Jonathan W., and Sarah Bemis. Later correspondents include Charles Sumner, Charles F. Adams, William H. Seward, and F.W. Sargent. Other materials include 10 volumes of diaries Bemis kept from 1836 to 1865, a journal of a trip to Europe kept by Jonathan W. Bemis (1853-54), part of a bound draft and hand-corrected proof of George Bemis's Report of the Case of John W. Webster, and Bemis's will.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Title:
Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915
Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Chandler, Peleg W. (Peleg Whitman), 1816-1889. Letters received, 1866-1874.
Title:
Letters received, 1866-1874.
These letters were received by Chandler after he retired from the bench and consideration of public office due to deafness. Yet, he continued to advise on the law and was consulted on legal and political matters by many including Governor Bullock and Congressman Hooper. In retirement, Chandler pursued other interests. A number of letters comment on his observations on the Authority of the Gospels, by a Layman (Chicago, 1867), a work notably influenced by Swedenborgian doctrines. Born in Maine, Chandler graduated from Bowdoin College in 1834 but maintained his ties to the state, where he owned a summer hotel, and to the school, which awarded him a L.L.D. in 1867. As an influential and respected resident of Boston, Chandler was involved in Back Bay improvements and in the development of the South End as a trustee of Huntington Avenue Lands. Correspondents include E.R. Hoar, John H. Clifford, George W. Blagden, George Otis Shattuck, John Codman Ropes, Rufus Ellis, Samuel Hurd Walley, Charles Wentworth Upham, George Tyler Bigelow, Cyrus Woodman, Alexander H. Bullock, Samuel Hooper, Charles Beecher, Edward Kent, Samuel Bowles, John Gorham Palfrey, George Frisbie Hoar, A.S. Packard, John Appleton, John Ross Key, Issac F. Redfield, Charles G. Greene and Charles Franklin Dunbar.
