Alfred Orage was born at Dacre, near Bradford in 1873, but following the death of his father, the family moved to Fenstanton in Huntingdonshire. He became a pupil teacher at the village school and then attended a teachers' training college at Culham, Oxfordshire. In 1893 he became an elementary school teacher in Leeds and began to develop wider interests, particularly in literature and socialism, co-founding the Leeds Art Club in 1900. He moved to London in 1906 as a freelance journalist and bought (with the financial backing of George Bernard Shaw and others) a weekly review, the New Age, which he edited until 1922. In 1923 Orage began to work on behalf of George Gurdjieff and subsequently went to America, where in 1927 he married for a second time: Jessie Richards Dwight, daughter of a dealer in building supplies, from Albany. He returned to England in 1930 and in 1932 founded the New English Weekly, which he edited until his death in 1934.
Editor, active in a wide range of artistic, social, and political activities. Edited "The New Age" and later, the "New English Weekly."

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.

Gurdjieff, Georges Ivanovitch, 1872-1949. File on Gurdjieff kept by Carl Zigrosser, 1923-1963, n.d.
Title:
File on Gurdjieff kept by Carl Zigrosser, 1923-1963, n.d.
There is no correspondence from Gurdjieff in this file. These files reflect Zigrosser's years of involvement with a Gurdjieff circle in New York City and his extensive study of Gurdjieff's teachings. Included are letters Zigrosser to his wife Florence King from France in 1927. At this time, Zigrosser visited the Gurdjieff Institute and sent detailed descriptions of the compound and life there, including diagrams. The bulk of the material concerns the intellectual circle of Gurdjieff followers Zigrosser was involved with in New York City: meeting announcements, schedules for public readings, membership lists, invitations to movement classes, movement brochures, summary lecture and reading notes (1923-1933) kept by Zigrosser based on the teaching of Gurdjieff and Orage, and copies of brochures put out by the Institute. There are also circular letters from Gurdjieff and the Institute, and regular requests for funds. There is a quantity of correspondence from members of the New York circle, detailing reaction to the frequent requests for money coming from Gurdjieff, problems within the circle and letters concerning events. There are letters from A. R. Orage, A. Salzmann, Israel Solon, Louise March, Jessamin Howarth, Muriel Draper, Louis Goepfert and Rita Romilly Benson. Other material includes newspaper clippings, an obituary for Gurdjieff, clippings of Zigrosser's writings about Gurdjieff and a photograph of Gurdjieff taken by David Hare in 1932.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1927-1971, n.d.
These letters are written by the artist Jessie Warneke, the wife of the sculptor Heinz Warneke. Their work was represented at the Weyhe Gallery. Her lively correspondence with Carl Zigrosser concerns itself with life among the American artists living in Europe in the 1930's, their circle of mutual friends in the art world of New York, the progress of Heinz Warneke's work and his commissions, her own work and exhibitions, domestic news, their life as artist-farmers in Connecticut, life in Washington, the 1963 unveiling of a statue by Heinz at the Philadelphia Zoo, and their appreciation of Zigrosser's books. Later letters concern old times together and the subject of aging. Among the people mentioned in Jessie Warneke's letters are Mabel Dwight, Florence King, Erhard Weyhe, Roderick Seidenberg, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Katherine Schmidt (Schubert), John B. Flannagan, Harry Gottlieb, Andrée Ruellan, Alexander Calder, Aristide Maillol, Kuei T'eng, Emil Ganso, Mitchell Jamieson, E. Boyd, Henry Mitchell, Thomas W. Nason, A. R. Orage and Sadakichi Hartmann.
