Papers of members of the Tobey and Sprague families of Mass. Papers of Capt. Silas Tobey of Kingston include letters written while at sea to his wife Betsey and other family members; records kept as clerk of the Kingston Cotton and Woolen Manufacturing Co.; a log of a voyage in the brig Prince Eugene in 1817 to Guadeloupe where he died of yellow fever; and numerous business papers and accounts relating to his family's mercantile interests out of Berkley, Mass. Papers of the Sprague family include letters from Phineas to his wife Betsey (widow of Silas Tobey) and with his brother Seth, his partner in the Boston shipping firm of P. & S. Sprague and Co. (Cont.) Papers of Edward S. Tobey (son of Betsey and Silas) include correspondence with his family, his step-father Phineas Sprague, and step-uncle Seth Sprague regarding the business interests of the firm of Phineas Sprague and Co. in which he was a partner, including many written from abroad while on business. Edward Tobey's papers and 6 scrapbooks (1838-75) cover his wide-ranging interests, among them the Boston Board of Trade; the Army Committee of the Y.M.C.A. which raised money for the U.S. Christian Commission during the Civil War; steamship building and business, including the American Steamship Co. and other firms; the Board of Indian Commissioners; the American Peace Society; and other charitable and reform causes. Additional correspondents include Samuel and Enoch Tobey, Alexander H. Rice, John D. Long, and George H. Stuart.
