Collection primarily consists of the papers of Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne, Episcopal minister, author, educator, and founder of the Chamberlayne School for boys (later St. Christopher's School) in Richmond, Va. Chamberlayne's correspondence, 1904-1939, contains letters from his siblings, especially Lewis Parke Chamberlayne, as well as from a network of college and secondary school teachers in Virginia and beyond. Along with correspondence pertaining to the school, these letters illuminate the history of the concept of masculinity--including fatherhood and the education of boys--in the first third of the 20th century. Also included are letters, 1897-1904, to Chamberlayne's mother, Mary Walker (Gibson) Chamberlayne, from her children; letters, ca. 1922- 1936, to Chamberlayne's son, Edward Pye Chamberlayne, from relatives and girl friends; and correspondence, 1912-1938, of Chamberlayne's wife, Elizabeth Breckinridge (Bolling) Chamberlayne, which contains letters to and from her son Edward and his wife. Also included are notes and correspondence for the monograph, Ham Chamberlayne - Virginian (1932), and several Virginia parish vestry books that Chamberlayne edited for publication.

Wood; Some meagre recollections of Mammy, by Mary Kelley Watson Smith about Bibby Mosby; Easter thoughts by Alice Earl Wood; prospectus from the Dietz Press for Ham Chamberlayne, Virginian; sample election ballot, 1932; distributed by the Democratic Party; photographs and slides of Sweet Chalybeate Springs, 1970, and a barn in Syria, Madison County, Va., 1968, with an unusual overhang; and assorted clippings regarding Virginia history.

Collection contains the correspondence, 1860-1882, of John Hampden "Ham" Chamberlayne, newspaper editor and politician of Norfolk and Petersburg, Va., and correspondence, 1865-1894, and accounts, 1882-1892, of his wife, Mary Walker (Gibson) Chamberlayne of Norfolk, Petersburg, and Richmond. Included are letters from their courtship, as well as papers of their parents and other Chamberlayne and Gibson kin. Among them are business correspondence, 1866-1871, and accounts, 1847-1879, of Martha Burwell (Dabney) Chamberlayne during her widowhood; correspondence and accounts, 1856-1876, of Edward Pye Chamberlayne who was deaf; correspondence, 1836-1892, of Churchill Jones Gibson; correspondence, 1837- 1893, of Lucy Fitzhugh (Atkinson) Gibson, as well as her commonplace book, ca. 1835; correspondence, 1839-1896, diary, 1874, and commonplace book, ca. 1862-1891, of Ann Elizabeth Jones (Gibson) Bartlett Gibson; and correspondence, 1882-1938, of Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne and his wife, Elizabeth Breckinridge (Bolling) Chamberlayne. There are also three student notebooks and an unattributed commonplace book, as well as some letters among members of the Waller family written during the Civil War. Papers address family relationships in the last half of the nineteenth century and reveal economic and personal aspects of Reconstruction for family members.

Includes notes and partial draft of THE VESTRY BOOK OF ST. PAUL'S PARISH, HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1706-1786, transcribed and edited by Chamberlayne. The volume was published in 1940, and reprinted in 1973 by the Virginia State Library Board.
