Includes personal, business, and foreign correspondence, bills, invoices and receipts, ordinance and gunpowder transactions, legal, insurance and tax documents, contracts and real estate papers, and other records that document the Hancock family's financial interests. Also contains bound volumes including daybooks and waste books, journals, ledgers, letterbooks, invoice and receipt books, and ships' logbooks. The bulk of the collection concerns the business activities of Thomas Hancock, circa 1730 to 1760, and John Hancock, circa 1755 to 1795. Also included are business records concerning Thomas Hancock's father-in-law Daniel Henchman, circa 1720 to 1765, as well as John Hancock's brother Ebenezer, circa 1765-1815, and his nephews Thomas and John, circa 1795-1820. The collection contains a wealth of information on mercantile affairs, politics, and American social, military, and legal history during the colonial and early federal period.

A letterbook of James Ivers, sugar refiner of Boston. Ivers addressed most of his letters to his son James Trecothick who took his mother's maiden name when, as a loyalist, he fled Boston. The correspondence concerns legal suits and claims against Trecothick. The main suit was brought by Charles Ward Apthorp. Ivers also wrote of family news, especially the marriages of his daughters Hannah and Jane to Jonathan Loring Austin and Benjamin Austin, respectively.

Accounts, 1864-1885, cover his business affairs; land papers, 1848-1891, include deeds, indentures, titles, and maps for property in New York and Louisiana; and unsorted papers contain printed materials and papers relating to his family.

Title: Nathaniel Goodwin diary and account book, 1780-1781.

Diary and account book attributed to Nathaniel Goodwin, kept in July 1780 (diary entries), and April - Sept. 1781 (account book). Goodwin notes his experiences with the 4th Plymouth County Militia during the Revolutionary War, including marches to and from various towns, such as Boston, Scituate, and Bridgewater, Mass. Goodwin also notes expenses associated with these marches, including payments from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to officers and tending and feeding the horses, and expenses associated with guarding and escorting militiamen who defected from various regiments. Entries were kept in an interleaved almanac for 1779. Charles Apthorp's signature appears on the front and back covers of the volume; Apthorp's connection to the diary and account book is unclear.
