The papers contain correspondence, business and legal papers, political papers and bound volumes of Bibb and others, all of a non-official character, removed from private offices on the premises of the Louisa County, Va., courthouse. In addition to papers of Bibb and other members of the Bibb family there are papers pertinent to Captain Boyd M. Smith, Reuben Lindsay Gordon, John G. May, William Worth Smith, Jr., Robert F. Moss, John Q. Rhodes, and the Mineral City Mining, Manufacturing and Land Company, as well as some Louisa County election materials. Include law practices, business ventures, particularly real estate development and mineral speculation, personal finances, and Democratic politics in Louisa County. Also include to a lesser degree guano manufacture, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, divorce cases, estate settlement, the Arminius Chemical Company, the development of the town of Mineral, the Boyd Smith mines, the Pyrites Chemical and Mining Company, the Guarantee Title & Investment Company of Roanoke, Va., the Louisa Lumber Company, debt collection, and family news and local events. Also briefly mention embezzlement, morphine addiction, marital problems, a lynching at Clifton Forge, Va., health problems including mental illness, the Pasteur Institute, a freedman's pension application for services to General Sheridan, Pantops Academy, newspaper publication, constitutional amendment to pay former owners for emancipated slaves, slave sales and hires, post-war hire of freedmen, battle of New Hope Church, post-war emigration to Brazil and Texas, and an end to Reconstruction in Louisa County. The collection also contains ledgers of the Louisa Guano Company and the Louisa Bargain House, minutes of the Louisa Literary Club, a journal of Flannagan and Talley, sawmill account books, a World War I scrapbook, land sale broadsides, minutes of the Board of Directors of the Central Virginian, company store script, tickets to the 1924 Democratic National Convention, a Confederate veterans roll, mining, real estate and railroad maps, and segregated voting lists.
