The records date from 1833 to 1960, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1870 to 1940. The majority of the collection consists of bound volumes, including ledgers, journals, cost books, shipping books, order books, price books, cash books, letterbooks, and payroll books, dating from 1833 to 1960. Also included is correspondence between Smith & Winchester and its customers and affiliated businesses and persons. The collection contains extensive information about Smith & Winchester's products, including machine patents, machine and equipment specifications, repairs records, and customer agreements and contracts. A notable series of photographs, glass plate negatives, and drawings are included. The images depict Smith & Winchester's papermaking machinery products and its manufacturing operations. The collection also contains numerous three-dimensional objects, including wooden foundry patterns.

Letters to and from Arnold, a Haddam, Connecticut, farmer, quarry operator, state representative and Congressman. The majority of the correspondence concerns the appointment of post masters in New Haven and Middlesex counties, while petitions and reports concern the construction of a new county jail and workhouse, petitions to incorporate the town of Higganum, and petitions to move the courts and workhouse to Middletown. One 1855 letter mentions the "humbug" of Nebraska. Correspondents include Connecticut politicians James T. Pratt and James Phelps. The collection also contains Samuel Arnold's deeds for land in Haddam, and some financial records. Brothers Isaac and Jonathan Arnold are represented by assorted legal and financial documents, including the settlement of Jonathan's estate.
