George Hammond served as Minister Plenipotentiary of Great Britain to the United States.
George Hammond (1763-1853) was educated at Merton College, Oxford, and was elected a fellow in 1787. He was secretary to David Hartley the younger at Paris, who was conducting peace negotiations with France and America. Hammond was charge d'affaires at Vienna 1788-1790. In August 1791 Hammond became the first British minister accredited to the United States. He left America in 1795 he returned to London to become foreign under-secretary. Hammond became intimate with his chief at the foreign office Lord Grenville (1759-1834) and the Tory politician George Canning (1770-1827). Hammond was joint editor of the 'Anti-Jacobin'. This journal was founded by George Canning in 1797. The intentions of the journal was to combat the radical political ideas which had emerged as a result of the French Revolution. It appeared weekly from 20th November 1797 to 7th July 1798.

Strickland, William, Sir, 1753-1834. A journal of a tour in the United States of America; and notes on various information collected during the progress of it in the years 1794 and 1795, ca. 1805.
Title:
A journal of a tour in the United States of America; and notes on various information collected during the progress of it in the years 1794 and 1795, ca. 1805.
Journal, written ca. 1805, in 19 v., including one index volume, and a draft, ca. 1795, of his report to the Board of Agriculture in England, which was printed in London in 1801, under the title Observations on the agriculture of the United States of America. The journal, evidently a fair copy written later from notes taken during his trip, describes his voyage from Hull to New York on the Fair American, and continues with his tour south to Richmond, and north to the Hudson Valley, Albany, Ticonderoga, Niagara, Quebec, Vermont, the White Mountains, Portland, Boston, Connecticut, and intermediate points. He writes about people he met, particularly British minister George Hammond, Robert R. Livingston, and Philip Schuyler. He also discusses manufactures, slavery, the price of provisions, sawmills, schools, the waste of timber, taxes, land tenure and rental, wages, the wheat trade at Albany, wool, sheep, use of oxen, trees, plants, wildlife, treatment received at inns, the use of gypsum or plaster, complaints about the conduct of British officers and cruisers, crops, the curing of beef, etc. The report to the Board of Agriculture discusses such issues as the price of labor, irrigation, profitability of wheat crops, Buffalo clover, cost of land, clover seed as an export for refertilizing English soil, and American husbandry in general. The material is accompanied by a photocopy of Strickland's notes during his journey, kept in a printed format entitled Naturalist's Journal, and photographs of Boynton Hall, Strickland's home in Yorkshire.
