The Leon Banov Jr. Collection, 1950s to 1990s, contains 5.5 cubic feet, consisting of six boxes and 174 folders of material relating to Banov Jr.'s career as a proctologist at MUSC, his work with the FDA, various medical societies and associations, and his research on proctological history. Files are arranged in five series: proctological history, contemporary issues, associations and organizations, personal, and notebooks, arranged further by chronology, name of folder, or person's name. Materials consist of collected items including correspondences, newspaper articles, articles written by others about proctology, and publications by both Banov Jr. and the societies of which he was a member. Folders were named by Dr. Banov and processing archivist, where necessary. The proctological history series, 1.5 cubic feet, 1950s to the early 2000s, includes various articles and notes on the Chester Beatty Papyri and Egyptological History, Assyrian Proctology, Roman Proctology, Medieval Proctology, the history of Hemorrhoids, and other proctological history. Also included in the Proctological History section is Banov Jr.'s work about prominent people with anorectal diseases and proctologists such as Brodie, George Bushe, Colles, Frederick Salmon, James Syme, and Richard Wiseman. Included are other various proctology articles, talk ideas, and articles on Banov Jr.'s medical related interests outside of proctology. The Contemporary issues series, 1.0 cubic foot, 1960s to 1988; includes articles, correspondence, newspaper clippings and information regarding the Civil Rights, Eldercare/Medicare, and the FDA Advisory Board and its work on Preparation H. The Medical societies and associations series, 1.0 cubic foot, 1950s to the 1990s, consists of information and correspondences regarding Mrs. Banov's participation in the Women's Auxiliary Medical Association, his own participation in the Waring Historical Library Association, programs and correspondences regarding the MUSC Alumni Affiliation, American Proctological Society, Charleston County Board of Health, National Committee on Digestive Diseases, and the South Carolina Medical Association. The personal series, 0.75 cubic foot, 1961-1998, consists of photos, resumes, information including certificates, correspondences, republications, and newspaper articles regarding Banov Jr. and his father, Leon Banov Sr. Contained in this series are three files specifically related to Dr. Banov Sr.'s book As I Recall, his work with the Charleston County Health Department, and his death. This series also contains various other non-proctological subjects about which Banov Jr. was interested, as well as many of his lecture slides and reprints from his historical and medical writings. The notebooks series, 0.5 cubic foot, undated, consists of various legal pads of Banov Jr.'s notes for lectures, articles, and other things.
