John Chapman (1801-1854), political writer and inventor, was born in Loughborough, England.

His early career was in factory works and manufacturing. In 1844 he developed a plan for the Great Indian Penisular Railway and traveled to India in 1845. He wrote for various magazines throughout his life, including The Westminster Review, Railway Times, Baptist Examiner and the Economist.
