Personal, business, and family papers of merchant Matthew Ridley of Maryland and France, 1717-1812. Personal papers include correspondence between Matthew and his fiancě (and later wife) Nancy Richardson Ridley discussing, among other things, their son Essex, 1771-82; diaries kept by Ridley discussing everyday life in Maryland during the Revolutionary War, 1777-78; and diaries kept while living in France and Amsterdam and working as an agent for the state of Maryland, 1781-84. Business papers include correspondence between Ridley and other merchants such as Mark Pringle, John Hunt, William Russell, and John Holker, 1771-86; letterbooks containing copies of letters discussing the effect of the Revolutionary War on Maryland commerce; copies of letters discussing Ridley's work with the London firm Stewart and Campbell; and an account book, 1776-78. Collection also includes an unidentified notebook containing business records of a salt mill in Portsmouth, England, 1717; math lesson books kept by Matthew, 1761, and his son Essex, 1793; and correspondence between Ridley's second wife, Catherine Livingston Ridley and Essex, 1795-96, and between his daughter, Susan Ridley and her future husband Theodore Sedgwick, 1812.

Personal papers include two letterbooks of retained copies of outgoing correspondence, Sept 1776-June 1778 and May-Aug 1782, discussing politics and trade during the Revolution; correspondence with his first and second wives, Nancy Richardson Ridley and Catherine Livingston Ridley; correspondence with his mother and sister, Frances Huttson and Jane Huttson Sears; correspondence with Robert Morris discussing the education of their sons; and correspondence with John Jay (including sixteen typescripts) regarding French and Dutch reactions to the Revolution. Ridley's business papers, 1773-89, include two account books, 1771-75 and 1776-77; correspondence and accounts with Mark Pringle, John Hunt, William Russell, Thomas Peters, John Holker, and other merchants, 1773-89; and records concerning Ridley's estate, 1789-1804. Family papers include letters received by Nancy Richardson Ridley; letters received by Catherine Livingston Ridley from various correspondents including siblings Margaret Livingston, Henry Brockholst Livingston, Susanna Livingston Symmes, and brother-in-law John Jay, Robert and Mary White Morris, and Gouverneur Morris, 1770s-1812; letters received by daughter Susan Anne Livingston Ridley Sedgwick from her aunt, Susanna Livingston Symmes, 1802-36; letters received by son Essex Sherbourne Ridley; and a daybook kept by Essex, Nov 1795-Nov 1796. Collection also includes ship accounts for Captain Archibald Kennedy including HMS Centaur, 1754-57; various Livingston family papers, 1760-1820; and a manuscript copy of a grammar text, Jan 1800.

Richard Henry Lee Papers, 1763-1823

Title: Richard Henry Lee Papers 1763-1823

A politician and arch revolutionary, Richard Henry Lee was an impassioned supporter of American independence from the mid-1760s. Born into one of the most prominent families in the colony on January 20, 1732, Lee was bred to a political life, serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses during the Stamp Act and Non-importation crises, helping convey his state into the revolutionary camp. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, Lee was the first to officially move that a declaration of independence be drafted, and he ended his public career as a principled opponent of ratification of the Constitution and as Virginia's first U.S. Senator. He died at home in Virginia in June 1794. A small, but highly valuable collection, the papers of Richard Henry Lee document the political life and activities of one of the most ardent revolutionaries in Virginia. The 0.5 linear feet of letters (193 items), most addressed to Lee, are an important resource for study of pre-Revolutionary political agitation in Virginia, the increasing connections forged between the colonies, and the political course of the war. To a lesser degree the collection documents Lee's late-life anti-federalism. Among the major correspondents are Lee's brothers Arthur and William, and such leaders in the revolutionary cause as George Washington, Samuel Adams, Charles Lee, John Adams, and Thomas Paine.
