Expressed his sympathy for the death of Broadus's wife, Maria Carter Broadus. "Experience has taught me how to sympathize with you. Twice has the bitter cup which you have been called to drink been prefered to my own lips; and those, and only those who have tasted it know its bitter dregs ... Is it not teaching you lessons, important lessons, hard to learn, but which can be learned no where so well as in the school of affliction." Maria Carter Broadus died on Oct. 21, 1857.

We are all well except Annie, and she seems to get on very well during the day, but is restless at night. I think we will have to give her 'Vermifuge' before she will be entirely well."

Wrote about missing her husband, the kindness of other guests. Concerning her health: "My cold is getting well, but the water produces no effect. I hope you will get back Thursday, for I really believe that I have gained all the benefit that is at all probable, and I want to leave. I may possibly be injured."

Wrote 2 letters, in case John did not get one of them, with similar content. She was having problems: "the chambermaid on this row was changed this morning and I did not get waited on at all." Maria was unwell and staying at the Springs for her health, although "the water does not affect me in any manner. However, she felt better "than I have since I left home, as I was not troubled with that swelled feeling." She died in October.

April 22: She wrote "I had felt badly all day in consequence of not having had quite sleep enough, and today too I have at times been far from feeling light and active. April 25. I have felt unwell a large part of the time and then I can't exert myself much. Today, when I returned to Papa's to dinner after giving Nanny her music lesson I was so much exhausted, I felt I could hardly get there. April 26. I felt very badly all day yesterday, and didn't read more than two hours all put together." Maria Louisa, the Broadus's third child was born ca. June, 1856.

Asked John if he knew "a son of G.W. Spooner." The boy had shown up at the train station with no funds and James had loaned him the money to buy a ticket to Orange Court House. In closing, he said, "Mary [James' wife, Mary Catherine], I think has written to Maria [John's wife, Maria Carter] and has no doubt mentioned our other little daughter ten days old."

Nov. 9. Answered a letter in which Broadus, writing immediately prior to his wife's death, inquired about the dates for a series of meetings he had promised to preach for Jeter. Jeter, sympathetic to Broadus's grief, explained his delay in answering: "First, I knew that your mind, absorbed in its recent affliction, would revolt at the formation of any immediate plans for future labor. Nov. 16. Jeter was watching his congregation, trying to decide on the best time for the services to be held. Nov. 22. "Our church has concluded to hold a series of meetings. We commence at once." Nov. 25. Expressed his disappointment that Broadus had not yet arrived, but was "pleased at the cause of the failure [Broadus's own church was experienceing revival].
