Papers of three generations of the family of Reverend John C. Burruss and the related family of Edward McGehee, both of Wilkinson County, Miss., pertaining to the Methodist Church in early Mississippi, the social and intellectual life of a wealthy planter family, religious justification of slavery, education in southern and eastern colleges, and Civil War military service and civilian participation. Personal and business papers (1826-1858) of Reverend John C. Burruss concern the Methodist Church. Correspondence (1825-1855) of his son, John Williams Burruss, reflects student life, plantation life, and the construction of Oaklands Plantation, La. Letters (1825-1836) of Mary Burruss McGehee, daughter of John C. Burruss, reflect plantation life and Methodist principles. Papers of Edward McGehee Burruss, son of John William F. Burruss, concern student life at Princeton University, Confederate military service, and civilian life during the Civil War. Collection also includes correspondence of Ann Burruss Kennard, daughter of John Williams F. Burruss.
