Title: Papers, 1842-1895.

Correspondence, professional bills, and accounts. Papers of the earlier years are concerned with prices and the shipment of corn, meal, plaster, wheat, flour, and tobacco; later papers include bills for professional services. Personal letters from James S. Hamm, Alabama lawyer, written during the 1840s, give details of Alabama social life and customs, and describe the murder of Sidney S. Perry by John A. Winston, state senator and later governor of Alabama. Civil War letters deal with Birckhead's work with a committee for the aid of indigent families of soldiers. Letters to Birckhead's daughter, Millie, from friends and former schoolmates at the Piedmont Female Academy, are more concerned with social life than with the war. Postwar papers include accounts of the estates of Nehemiah Birckhead and William P. Wilkerson, of which Edward Birckhead was executor.

Alabama Writers' Project. Photographs, 1901-1941.

Title: Photographs, 1901-1941.

The function of the Alabama Writers' Project was to provide employment for journalists, free-lance writers, and college instructors. One of the activities performed by the project was to record images for use as illustrations. The series consists of photographs taken or acquired for use in AWP publications, most notably the Guide, Alabama Hunter, Fish are Fighters in Alabama, (the latter two were published by the Alabama Dept. of Conservation) and an unpublished work titled Alabama in Profile. The subjects include: agriculture, architecture, bridges and dams, education, churches, African Americans, industry, recreation, parks, and transportation. Almost all Alabama counties are represented in the photos but some communities are especially well-documented. These include: Eufaula, Montgomery, Mobile, Birmingham, Lee County, Sumter County, Baldwin County, and Monroe County. Photographs of colleges and universities are also prominent, including Alabama College (now the University of Montevallo), Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), Florence State Teacher's College (now the University of North Alabama), Huntingdon College, Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University), and the University of Alabama. The series contains photos or sketches of such prominent Alabamians as Helen Keller, Julia Tutwiler, John Anthony Winston, Judge J. S. Williams, Pushmataha, Octavus Roy Cohen, William C. Gorgas, George Washington Carver, and Frederick D. Patterson. Also included are images of: Yoholo Micco, Tah-Chee, Sequoyah, Rosa Lee Duncan, Ralph Duncan, B. B. Ross, Annie Blair, Ola Titus, Hattie Thomas, Eugenia P. Smartt, J. C. (Doc) Hughes, Burnett Carter, and Chester Latham. Black Alabamians photographed include: Arthur McKimmon Brown, William L. Dawson, James Perry, George Harris, Plummie Rhett Tucker, Dora Green, and Jorena Pettway. Several well-known photographers recorded images for the Writers' Project, including W. Lincoln Highton, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Wolcott, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange.

Title: Administrative files, 1857-1861.

This series consists of Gov. A.B. Moore's administrative files, containing correspondence, reports, legislative bills and resolutions, oaths, bonds, petitions, proclamations, and financial records. Topics discussed include banking, railroads, prisons, education, taxes, slaves, abolition, states' rights, secession, and preparations for military defenses. Included are financial statements from railroad companies receiving donations of land and low-interest state loans for railroad construction; charters, bond agreements, and quarterly financial statements of banks; letters to Moore from the Comptroller's office of the U.S. Dept. of Treasury regarding the balance of the two and three percent funds accruing from the sale of public lands within the state; reports on conditions at the State Penitentiary; and correspondence with public officials and private individuals concerning the developing sectional crisis in national politics. Included is correspondence to Peter Bryce and James Searcy at the Ala. Insane Hospital; reports from engineer John T. Milner about a survey of the mineral district near Elyton, Jefferson Co. (Ala.); reports from Dr. Thomas Mason, physician at the State Penitentiary; and a request from Benjamin Fitzpatrick for copies of Smith's Alabama Justice. There is a large amount of correspondence regarding bank loans to the state to help finance the war. Banks frequently mentioned are Central Bank of Ala., Eastern Bank of Ala., Southern Bank of Ala., and the Bank of Mobile. There are a number of letters to Moore from Howell Cobb, Sec. of the U.S. Treasury, concerning sums of money from the three percent fund that were loaned to railroads. Railroads frequently mentioned are the Tennessee and Coosa, the Ala. and Florida, the Ala. and Tennessee River, and the Selma and Gulf Railroad. Significant items in the series include correspondence between Moore and S.C. Gov. W.H. Gist regarding the 1860 June Democratic Convention in Charleston, S.C., and the appointment of delegates to a convention of Southern States; letters from Edmond W. Pettus, I.W. Garrott, John A. Winston, and John Gill Shorter in their capacity as commissioners of Ala. to other slaveholding states. A letter to Moore from U.S. Congressman J.L.M. Curry discusses the Dred Scott decision, Stephen A. Douglas, William Seward, and states' rights. Correspondence with Edward C. Bullock, Septimus Cabaniss, Tennent Lomax, and Robert Livingston concern the election of Abraham Lincoln, the election of delegates to the Ala. Secession Convention, and efforts to establish direct trade between Ala. and foreign countries. Also present is a letter from Alfred C. McKeen about his invention for lifting ships over sand bars, the blueprints of which are contained in an oversized folder.

Title: Correspondence files, 1853-1857.

The first part of this series contains incoming and outgoing letters regarding banking and bank examinations, railroads, plankroads, and slavery. The second part of this series contains incoming and outgoing letters on various topics, including attendance at the Southern Commercial Convention, illustrations for a book titled, "The Progress of the United States," room reservations by Col. Baldwin, the paying of fees, and delivery of the "Journal of the House of Representatives." Many pieces contain the original letter and the response on one sheet. Correspondence on slavery includes resolutions (printed) from New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Mass. regarding the spread of slavery to new territories, the Dred Scott bill, and the Kansas-Nebraska Bill. Included are exchanges between Gov. Winston and Gov. Henry Gardner of Massachusetts. Another issue addressed in several letters is the sale of liquor to slaves. The correspondence for 1854 includes a report by engineeers specifying improvements to be made on the Tombigby river. The report outlines seventeen areas from Black Bluff and Crooner Shoals to Emmets Bar and Turner Shoals enumerating work needed at each area. Also included with this report are letters from pilots as to the danger of the obstructions on the river. Correspondents in 1855 included W.C. Allen, Alabama Secretary of State, R.T. Scott, and Jacob Harris. Attached to the Harris letter is a newspaper clipping from the March 10, 1855, Thursday evening edition of the Tribune regarding the sentencing of George Carmelich (also spelled Carmeliche). Within the correspondence of 1856 are several letters regarding information on weights and measures from A.D. Barker, Superintendent, visits to the capital by various local officials, the availability of public lands, books for the Naval Library at Annapolis, and the State Penitentiary. There is one printed document from the Secretary of the American Medical Association regarding a report on "Hydrophobia: its Origin and Development, as influenced by climate, season and other circumstances." Correspondence of 1857 pertains to widely varied topics including wharfage in Mobile, land patents, assurance of appointments, an apology for being unavailable to Col. James Weaver due to illness. Letters referring to banking and bank examinations include correspondents Central Bank of Montgomery, Central Bank of Alabama, Branch Bank of Huntsville, the Southern Bank of Alabama, Commercial Bank of Selma and the Commercial Bank of Alabama.

Alabama. Governor (1845-1847 : Martin). Militia files, 1846-1847.

Title: Militia files, 1846-1847.

The governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the administering of decisions and actions relating to military affairs and the maintenance of the state militia. This series contains letters, reports, muster rolls, and military orders relating to the militia and military affairs. Topics often discussed include equipment and supplies, formation of companies, election of officers, and troop movements. The muster rolls list the names of the men enlisted in the various county and independent companies. Included are the muster rolls of Sydenham Moore, Captain of the Eutaw Rangers, and John A. Winston, Captain of the Sumter County Volunteers. In 1846 May, President Polk requested volunteers from every state to fight the Mexicans in Texas. As a result of this request, militia units began to correspond with Governor Martin concerning their state of readiness. These letters usually contain the number of troops available and the names of their officers. Included in this correspondence are letters from Major General Joseph Bates, commander of the Sixth Division of Alabama militia; Brigadier General Walter Smith, commander of the 1st Alabama Volunteer Regiment; and Major John J. Seibles, commander of the 1st Battalion of Alabama Volunteers. Also included in this series is correspondence with William L Marcy, Secretary of War.

This series functioned to document the recording duties and other functions of the Secretary of State. Besides letters, this series also contains extraditions, handbills, petitions, and receipts. Subjects discussed include the awarding of commissions of various types, particularly land commissioners and notary publics, the creation of new electoral beats, the formation of new counties, the Alabama-Florida boundary, state tax assessments, bids for printing public documents, the cost of improving the Capitol grounds in Tuscaloosa in the late 1840s, land ownership, the crime of stealing slaves, corporation charters, taking the census, Michael Tuomey's work on a geological survey, the incorporation of the Masonic Female College in Auburn in 1852, temperance, militia units, James H. Weaver's 1857 campaign to be re-elected Secretary of State, and railroads, particularly the Northeast and Southwest Alabama Railroad.
