Eliot, William Havard, 1796-1831. Papers, 1819-1831.

Title: Papers, 1819-1831.

Eliot, 1815 graduate of Harvard and a Boston merchant, left his diary detailing a tour of the Highlands of Scotland in 1819, a letter book which chronicles his business activities for 1822-29, and a diary and commonplace book for 1831, indexed by his son. Miscellaneous papers include deeds for property on Beacon St. (1819-20) and lists of proprietors of the Nahant Hotel (1822) and Church (1831) which Eliot helped to establish. A group of letters received are to be found among Personal and Family papers, 1810-1910 / Samuel Eliot (Mss. .L140), for which there is a finding aid.

Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Title: Palfrey family papers, 1713-1915

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Title: Personal and family papers, 1810-1910.

The papers of Samuel Eliot (1821-1898) comprise an unique, multi-faceted family archive spanning the years 1810-1910. Accumulated by various members of the Otis and Eliot families of Boston, the collection consists of diaries, scrapbooks, letters, miscellaneous documents and associated printed matter. The collection clearly illustrates the background, education and activities of Samuel Eliot, Harvard class of 1839, historian and social reformer, who served as president of Trinity College, Hartford, and superintendent of Boston Public Schools. The Eliot papers are anchored by his lucid and fascinating 12 v. diary, 1839-1898, in which he records daily activities (with excursions to the South, Cuba and Europe) as well as religious and philosophical reflections. Of note are Eliot's perceptions of the slavery issue, Whig politics and the reform of education. Covered in greatest detail are the years prior to 1870. Allied to the diary are letters received, 1829-1898, which demonstrate the full range of his familial and professional ties. Many of the correspondents, including Phillips Brooks, Charles W. Eliot, Julia Ward Howe, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Jared Sparks and George Ticknor were important figures of the day. The sum of the papers paints a vivid portrait of an enlightened and articulate civil servant of the Gilded Age.
