Through his craniometic studies of human races, the Philadelphia physician Samuel George Morton (1799-1851) exerted a profound influence on the development of physical anthropology in antebellum America, and made substantial contributions to mineralogy, paleontology, and natural history. Relating primarily to Morton's scientific interests, the Morton Papers include insights into Morton's perspectives on education, medical practice, geology and mineralogy, craniology, paleontology, the Wilkes Exploring Expedition (also known as the United States Exploring Expedition 1838-1842), and his two major monographs, the and . Several of the letters were written by Morton in his capacity as corresponding secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. Also included in this collection are Morton's "Some Remarks on the Infrequency of Mixed Offspring Between the European and Australian Races" (1850), Joseph Barclay Pentland's notes on the aborigines of Peru (ca. 1840?), and newspaper clippings on Morton's death; a diary of Morton's trip to the West Indies, 1834, a set of craniological sketches for use in Crania Americana, and a microfilm of letters in private hands, written to Morton, 1838-1844 Crania Americana Crania Aegyptiaca

Title: Edmund Ravenel papers, 1820-1871.

Papers consist of personal, professional, and business correspondence, financial records, plantation papers, and other items. Ravenel's correspondence with academic colleagues, scientists, government officials, and others concerns the Medical College of South Carolina, laboratory equipment at the Charleston Library Society, conchology and other natural sciences, compensation for Ravenel's medical services at the Ft. Moultrie hospital during the Mexican War and during a yellow fever epidemic in 1858, a brickmaking machine and other inventions, and other matters. Correspondents include John Bachman, Lewis R. Gibbes, and inventor Nathan Sawyer of Baltimore (Md.). Other business and personal correspondence concerns medical and financial matters, and plantation affairs at the Grove. Included are drafts of letters to newspapers regarding beach erosion on Sullivan's Island, dredging of the Maffit's Channel, the Bowman Dyke, and Drunken Dick Shoal. Financial records consist of bills and receipts for medical supplies, medical accounts, receipts for taxes and various household expenditures, plantation accounts, mortgages, and other items. Related correspondence includes letters from Ravenel's collection agents concerning payments of and building repairs for tenants, and a letter concerning his purchase of Brabant Plantation. Other items include lists of slaves, writings (mostly fragments), patents, including one (1838) from B.H. Brown for a brickmaking machine, and estate papers (1831-1850) of Timothy Ford and his wife Mary Magdalen Ford.

Holograph notebook (1816-1829) belonging to John Stevens Cogdell contains copies of correspondence, notes, clippings, and other material relating primarily to art. Includes copies of Cogdell's correspondence with Samuel F.B. Morse, Dr. Edmund Ravenel, Washington Allston, Thomas Sully, the Marquis de Lafayette (concerning Cogdell's bust of William Moultrie), and others. Notes are on painting, sculpting techniques, and art and artists. Included are notes on the publication "The art of painting in oil" by [Thomas?] Bardwell, the colors used by Samuel F.B. Morse, and Cogdell's efforts to create busts of various individuals. Newspaper clippings from the Southern Patriot (1828) and Baltimore Republican, and a broadside concern Cogdell's bust of William Moultrie. The volume also includes a drawing of a landscape and a pencil sketch (1826) portrait.

Title: Edmund Ravenel papers, 1836-1864.

Papers consist of plantation and medical papers, correspondence, and other items. Plantation papers include an account book (1851-1864) containing a general cash account; accounts for bonds and notes; and accounts for sales of lumber, rice, and bricks, as well as for plantation and personal expenses. The book also contains a few journal entries (1863-1865) mainly pertaining to shipments of lumber (mostly pine) by boat. In addition, there are clippings and receipts pasted into the book. Other plantation papers include loose accounts; receipts; papers (1836-1845) relating to the purchase of the Grove, Brabant, and Moreland plantations including a mortgage and other legal documents, receipts, and related correspondence; and slave records, including receipts, a slave bill of sale (1854), an abstract of title (1854) to a slave named Caesar, and a handbill (1849) advertising the sale in Charleston (S.C.) of "72 Rice Field Negroes" (listing their names and qualifications). Medical papers consist of reports on cases of yellow fever, bilious remittent fever, and gastritis on Sullivan's Island (S.C.) in 1858; "General directions about the Cholera" (instructions for diagnosis and treatment) which were "sent to Mr. Lamb at the Grove [Plantation] in September 1836"; prescriptions for medicines for cholera; a receipt (1858) for rent of a house on Sullivan's Island used for a hospital; and accounts of Dr. Edmund Ravenel with the U.S. Hospital at Fort Moultrie. Correspondence includes a letter (1854) from Edmund Ravenel to his wife concerning cases of yellow fever on Sullivan's Island and the devastation wrought by a hurricane there (describing damage to his plantation, also); letters (1858) concerning a dispute over the location of a hospital; and a draft of a letter (n.d.) concerning an epidemic of bilious remittent fever and cases of yellow fever on Sullivan's Island. Other items include a fragment of a devotional book (1857?) containing prayers and meditations, and a bond (1863).

Ravenel, Edmund, 1797-1871. Edmund Ravenel Letters.

Title: Edmund Ravenel Letters.

The Edmund Ravenel Letters, 1824 and 1835, include his March 1824 application to Joseph Manning, president of the Medical Society of South Carolina, as a candidate for the position of chair of chemistry and pharmacy at the newly created Medical College of South Carolina. Also included is a March 1835 letter from Edward Frost, secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Medical College, communicating the resolution passed by the Trustees of the Medical College upon Ravenel's retirement from his position on the faculty.
