Consisting chiefly of business papers, including correspondence, stock reports, powers of attorney, promissory notes, bills and receipts, and lease agreements, re Latta's business and philanthropic activities; stockholder materials of the Commercial Bank of Columbia, the Bank of the State of North Carolina, the Merchants Bank of South Carolina at Cheraw, the Bank of Charleston, the Bank of Hamburg, the Bank of Camden, and the South-Western Railroad Bank, as well as the South Carolina Rail Road Company, the Louisville, Cincinnati, and Charleston Railroad Company, South Carolina Insurance Company, and Columbia Insurance Company. Land papers, deeds, plats, mortgages, and lease agreements relate to Latta's land ownership in the Columbia, S.C., area, including his purchase from B.L. McLauchlin of 3 squares in the city of Columbia and adjoining acreage. Lease agreements include, 9 May 1832, between Latta and postmaster Samuel Green for a store housing the Columbia post office. Letters, 14 May and 8 July 1845, of Columbia contractor Eli Killian, concern the construction of a residence for Latta. Personal correspondence, property conveyances, bills, receipts, and legal agreements, 1830-1852, document Latta's efforts on behalf of the wife and children of his deceased brother William (d. 1829), of Darlington District, S.C., including letters between Latta and Society Hill attorney Josiah James Evans. Other family members represented include Latta's niece Ann Latta Henry and her husband, William Henry, nephew Albert Latta, and niece Mary Killen. Also includes documents re conveyance or sale of Negro slaves, 14 Dec. 1832, 6 Dec. 1844, 8 Apr. 1847, 1 Jan. 1849; letters, 25 Aug.-20 Sept. 1852, re arrangements for selling a house and lot in Camden, S.C., from C.M. Wienges to Latta in trust for his nephew, Robert Latta, Jr.; letter, 13 Oct. [18]52, Robert Latta, [Jr.], to J.A. Crawford, Columbia, S.C., reporting that William Harrison Scarborough had completed a portrait of Robert Latta; and photocopy of volume, 1824-1831, 1835, "Sundry Bills of Furniture for the New House."
