Acknowledges favor of 15th ult. with membership diploma to philosophical society; will be delighted to communicate anything possible to the society; fears no more bones of Megalonyx will be found in cave; mentions again figure of lion carved on rock on Kenawha [sic] with many other figures of bears apparently of great antiquity.

Saw his friend Col. John Stuart in Greenbrier Co. with intention to visit cave where bones of American Lion were found; found he had already been there and sent Jefferson bones; describes some others that were found and gives account of George Wilson and John Davies's report of their experience while hunting on Cheet River in 1765; also similar account by a John Moorehead; mentions animal figures carved on rock by natives many years ago on bank of Kanhawa; does not believe bones found can be of animal heard on 1765 as found some distance underground; Mr. Cavendish feels they are of great antiquity; some of best deer licks in Greenbrier formerly frequented by buffalo are continuious to cave where bones were found; Mr. Randolph had memo from Jefferson to enquire where V. Miller could do some work for him in September but has more work on hand than can be completed in that time; the executive has requested his attention to running boundary line between Virginia and Kentucky; finds he does not have act of separation and requests Jefferson's copy; Mr. Monroe will bring it to the district court.

Being informed of his return to Albemarle Co. and having noted in his Notes his interest in antiquities, thinks bones of huge animal of claw found by saltpetre manufacturers in cave about 5 miles from writer's house would probably be of interest; is sending bones probably of lion kind; perfect picture of such animal carved on rock near confluence of Great Kenawha.

In answer to letter of May 26th have sent some more animal bones, all that can be procured; gentleman from New York accompanied him to cave where one of the claw bones about 2 inches long which Mr. Hopkins took with him; must be from small claw on leg above foot; an account of hunters George Wilson and John Davis in 1765 makes him feel animal yet exists; tells story as given him by Davis who now lives in Kentucky.
