President of Mexico, military leader. Born 1782 in Tixtla; died 1831 in Cuilapan. Guerrero began his military career in 1810. He was commissioned captain by José María Morelos before the attack on Taxco, was made colonel in 1814 by Juan Nepomuceno Rosains, and received the rank of general from Agustín de Iturbide. After Iturbide was removed as emperor, Guerrero was named General de División, and became a member of the Supremo Poder Ejecutivo which governed until 1824. Guerrero ascended to the presidency in April 1829. During his tenure a Spanish expedition attempted to reconquer Mexico. As a result, Guerrero organized a reserve army and placed his vice-president, Anastasio Bustamante, at its head. After the army defeated the invaders, the congress declared Guerrero unfit to govern and Bustamante became president. Guerrero left office on December 16, 1829, and initiated a counter-revolution which lasted through the year 1830. He was captured in January 1831, condemned to death by a council of war, and executed in Cuilapan on February 14, 1831.
President of Mexico, military leader. Born 1783 in Tixtla (now Ciudad Guerrero); died 1831 in Cuilapan. Guerrero began his military career in 1810. He was commissioned capitan by José María Morelos before the attack on Taxco, and became a lieutenant colonel in 1812.
Guerrero joined forces with Juan Nepomuceno Rosains (1814) to continue the fight for independence and was made colonel. After years of fighting against the royalists, in 1821 Guerrero formed an alliance with Iturbide, formerly an enemy, to pursue independence. Upon their success Guerrero received the rank of general and the Gran Cruz de la Orden de Guadalupe. After Iturbide was removed from power Guerrero was named General de División, and became a member of the Supremo Poder Ejecutivo which governed until the assumption of the presidency by Guadalupe Victoria in 1824.
Guerrero was also head of the Partido Yorkino, and was a candidate for the presidency of the Republic in 1828. Manuel Gómez Pedraza initially obtained a majority of votes, but the legislature reversed itself and declared Guerrero president. He took office in April 1829. During his presidency a Spanish expedition attempted to reconquer Mexico. As a result, Guerrero organized a reserve army, at whose head he placed his vice-president, Anastasio Bustamante. After the army defeated the invaders, the congress declared Guerrero unfit to govern and Bustamante became president.
Guerrero left office on December 16, 1829 and initiated a counter-revolution which lasted through the year 1830. Guerrero was captured in January 1831, condemned to death by a council of war, and executed in Cuilapan on February 14, 1831.

The Printed Material subgroup, in which the bulk of the items are dated 1822-1823, contains among its pamphlets and broadsides many literary productions, such as manifestos, speeches, odes, poetry, sermons, and pastoral letters, as well as decrees, circulars, and proclamations. Most items in Printed Materials pertain to independence, the empire of Iturbide, and the early days of the republic.

Muse collection relating to Mexico, Texas, and California, 1830-1844.
Letters and official communications pertaining to Mexican military and governmental affairs during the years 1830 to 1844, especially to Mexican internal affairs during 1831-1832, the Texas Revolution in 1835-1836, and events in Veracruz in 1839. In Series I, documents from 1831 are primarily about internal rebellions in Mexico and largely concern military efforts to subdue them; many relate to Nicolás Bravo, who commanded defending forces, and Vicente Guerrero and Juan Álvarez, who led rebel forces. Items from 1832 relate almost exclusively to the Veracruz garrison, commanded by Tomás Illanes, and its need for money and supplies. Materials from 1843 and 1844 pertain to Pedro de Ampudia; they deal mostly with administrative matters during his tenure as Comandante General in Tabasco but include his 24-page account of Francisco Sentmanat's 1844 attack on Tabasco and Ampudia's response to it. Only two items date from 1830. In Series II, materials dated 1835 are about the Texas Revolution; they often concern Mexican generals Martín Perfecto de Cos and Domingo de Ugartechea. Documents dated 1836 and 1837 pertain to Mexican plans for an invasion of Texas and related military matters, to the unsettled situation in California, and to an expedition to San Blas, California, to be led by José Urréa. Items in Series III illustrate the aftermath of the 1838 French invasion at Veracruz. They concern the fortress of San Juan de Ulúa, the treaty ending hostilities, an investigation into a loss of money at the Veracruz residence of Antonio López de Santa Anna, and the Comandancia General of Veracruz (headed at this time by Guadalupe Victoria and his successor, Francisco Toro).
