Papers, 1933-1934, consist of: typed "Arguments for endeavoring to get the Tolman collection of Indian antiquities from the Library to the Antiquarian" (1933 June 7); correspondence (four items, 1933 Sept. 15-29) between French and Percy Whiting Brown regarding possible formation of "Indian Antiquities Society," accomplishment of removal from Library to Society of cases used to house Tolman Collection (but not of collection itself), background of and possible donation to Society by Brown of William Barrett's artifact collection then in Brown's possession (referred to by French as the. (Cont.) Barrett-Tolman Collection, distinct from the Library's Tolman Collection), and the possibility (later realized) of acquiring for the Society the Alfred Winslow Hosmer artifact collection; suggested by-laws of the proposed Concord Indian Society / Musketaquid Indian Society / Concord Archaeological Society (two versions, [late Sept. 1933] and [Oct. 16?, 1933]); note (1934 Nov. 1), Benjamin L. Smith to Allen French, supporting formation of society but stating "my ideas of the proper method are too different from yours to allow me to take much part in it," (Cont.) and response (1934 Nov. 4) by French.

North Carolina educator and superintendent of public schools in Greensboro, N.C. The papers of Benjamin Lee Smith, North Carolina educator and Duke University alumnus, span the years 1916-1961, and contain correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and other printed material related to public education at both the local and state levels in North Carolina. There are also several dozen photographs of N.C. school buildings and personnel, circa 1930s-1950s. Papers are arranged in the following series: , (the largest series in the collection), , , and . Other topics include prohibition and the elections of 1928, and religion and politics in North Carolina. A small but significant amount of material concerns school integration in Greensboro and associated civil rights issues in North Carolina (located within boxes 10, 11, 14-16, 21, 24, 26 and 31). Collection also includes material on charitable organizations in which Smith was active, especially the Methodist Church, North Carolina Education Association (NCEA), Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, and the Horace Mann League. Alexander Worth McAlister was founder and president of Pilot Life Insurance Company and a leader in the North Carolina Conference for Social Service and the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare. Correspondence, writings, pictures, and other material of Alexander W. McAlister chiefly includes correspondence with associates in business and civic organizations and versions of published and unpublished writings by McAlister. Most items date from 1930 through 1943, although there is some earlier correspondence and some writings from as early as the 1880s. Well-documented in these papers are McAlister's activities as a member of the North Carolina Conference for Social Service and the North Carolina State Board of Charities and Public Welfare, as well as his association with various civic organizations in Greensboro. Much of the correspondence and many writings relate to particular concerns of McAlister, including prohibition, the New Deal, golf, child welfare, prison reform, the Community Church in Greensboro, and education. Although there is some material relating to McAlister's business activities, documentation in these papers of his work as an insurance executive and in other business ventures is incomplete. There also is little personal material regarding McAlister's family and close friends.
