Collection consists chiefly of letters of brothers, Charles Beverly Tate, James Graham Tate, and William Hanson Tate to their father, Charles Campbell Tate, and siblings Nannie Montgomery Tate and John Montgomery Tate. The brothers write about school news at Emory and Henry, 1859-1861, and Virginia Military Institute, 1857-1859; teaching at Anchor and Hope Academy, Wythe County, Virginia; a trip to Richmond for the dedication of the Crawford equestrian statue of George Washington; and the Civil War in which both William and James were killed. Civil War topics mentioned include camp life, evacuation of Harper's Ferry and burning of its bridge and public buildings, court-martial and execution of deserters, 1st battle of Kernstown, short rations, Kelly's Ford, Bristoe station, Shepherdstown, retreat from Cotton Hill, other skirmishes and generals J.E.B.
