This collection includes letters, account books, commonplace books, legal papers, etc., concerning Kane's career as a lawyer and politician. There is much professional correspondence, as well as a lot of family material, especially concerning his son, Elisha Kent Kane. The letters with George Mifflin Dallas and Francis R. Shunk are especially rich for Pennsylvania politics. There is also much concerning support for Alexander Dallas Bache's service in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

Papers largely consist of letters to Henry Vignaud from friends in Louisiana, among them the journalists Eugene Dumez and L. Placide Canonge and the jurist Edward Bermudez, and from friends and officials in the U.S. Department of State and the diplomatic service, Americans in public life, literary figures, historians, journalists, and other writers. The largest unit of the collection is composed of 89 letters, written in French, from Eugene Dumez. The letters, written in France and, beginning in 1864, from St. John the Baptist Parish, La., pertain to the Civil War and Reconstruction, with particular emphasis on the Confederate missions to France and England and efforts to secure recognition of the Confederacy, and, after the arrival of Dumez in Louisiana, to the military, political, social, and economic conditions and problems in Louisiana. Some of the letters concern Dumez's work as an editor of the French language newspapers Le Meschacébé and L'Avant-coureur, and shed light on late Civil War and post-war journalism in Louisiana. Nearly equal in size is a series of 75 letters, also written in French, from L. Placide Canonge, a New Orleans writer, journalist, and editor of the newspaper L'Abeille de la Nouvelle Orleans and the political and the literary journal L'Epoque. They concern literature, the theater, journalism, and other cultural matters of mutual interest in Louisiana and France. A smaller group of personal letters, chiefly in French, from Edward Bermudez, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Louisiana, concern a visit to France and mutual friends in Louisiana and France. Letters from friends and officials in the diplomatic service reflect the work and service of Vignaud in the U.S. Department of State. An assortment of letters from American writers express appreciation to Vignaud for his interest in their work and touch on his own historical research and writing. Correspondents include George Bancroft, Justin Winsor, Daniel Coit Gilman, Fred Morrow Fling, G.W.Smalley, William Henry Trescot, Albert Rhodes, Grace King, Francis Wharton, A. Thorndike Rice, and Moncure Daniel Conway.

The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963

The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

Also includes correspondence, architectural drawings, and photograph albums of the Cope family. Robert Patterson Kane's daughter Eliza Middleton Kane (1863-1952) married the Philadelphia architect Walter Cope (1860-1902) in 1893. The APS papers of Elisha Kent Kane are in call no. B K132.
