Contains amorous and religious poems, including several which have been attributed to Ludovick Lloyd, Raleigh, Campion, Dyer, Corbet, and Essex, and Nash's Dilldo [or Choice of valentines] (leaf 53v), epigrams of Sir John Davies, proverbs, maxims, riddles and 2 facetious sermons in Welsh English (leaf 5 and 5v). The phrase "shake the spear" occurs on leaf 31v. A number of poems ca. 1675-ca. 1725, a few attributed to Dryden and Pope, have been added. Contains the text of an early version of the ballad 'Wallsingham", which Ophelia alludes to in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Manuscript, on paper, in a secretary hand, of the summary record of a Court of Chancery case between two nephews of the poet and courtier Sir Edward Dyer, both asserting ownership rights to the parsonage of Weston in Somerset, Edward Dyer by the right of primogeniture and Francis Dyer by right of a conditional grant. The document contains the bill, the answer, the replication, and the proofs of both the plaintiff and the defendant. The various testimonies contain significant biographical information on Sir Edward Dyer, including his complex and frequently shifting relationships with his nephews, his repeated financial difficulties, and his alleged marriage proposal to a "Mistress Whigham" in 1566.

Poems by late 16th- and early 17th-century authors, ranging from love lyrics to commentary on current events. Contains four poems known to be by Robert Herrick and 18 more attributed to him; also poems by Thomas Carew (47), William Strode (25), Bishop Richard Corbet (11), Thomas Randolph (8), Bishop Henry King (7), Sir John Harington (6), Ben Jonson (5), John Donne, (4), Sir Walter Raleigh (3), Gervase Warmestry (3), Sir John Davies (2), William Browne (2), and one each of Henry Rainoldes, Samuel Rowlands, Sir Henry Wotton, William Drummond, Robert Browne, Thomas Bateson, Sir Thomas Jay, John Gill, James I, John Fletcher, John Taylor, Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Edward Dyer, Sir Robert Ayton, Samuel Daniel, Francis Beaumont, and Brian Duppa; and Shakespeare's sone "Take O take those lips away." On six pages at the end and on the inside of the front cover is an index. The compilation was made in a single hand, and not completed before 1633, since the latest datable text is an elegy to Gusavus Adolphus, whodied in that year.
