Title: Papers, 1728-1799.

This collection of accounts and receipts reflects the popular styles in textile and clothing during the period 1728 to 1799. It is a record of Waine's daily transactions with Boston textile and clothing merchants for specific fabrics and finished products (for which he occasionally paid with items from his store). Waine also dealt extensively in general merchandise, such as foodstuffs, liquor, and cords of wood. A folder of receipts and accounts, for the period 1746 to 1799, include records of items purchased from merchants John Pigeon ( - ), Oliver Wiswall (1664-1746), John Hancock (1737-1793), and Benjamin Greene (1715-1776). Among the items purchased were a large variety of yard goods, ready-made articles of clothing, and general merchandise. Waine, in turn, made and sold custom-ordered garments, and recorded personal work done for him, salaries paid to his employees, and rent paid to his landlord. Three "waste" books (or daybooks), for the period 1729 to 1770, detail Waine's debits and credits on a daily basis. The occupation of each person concerned is usually listed. A ledger, for the period 1745 to 1774, is a complete list of Waine's dealings with each merchant and customer. Three receipt books, for the period 1728 to 1777, are a record of the settlement of debts signed by specific creditors.
