Business letter addressing payments of outstanding financial obligations of this textile mill in South Carolina during the Civil War. Letter, 29 June 1861, of James Montgomery, written from Graniteville (Aiken County, S.C.) and addressed to A[ndrew] B[axter] Springs, Fort Mill (Lancaster County, S.C.), reports, "By order of the President," that "We are now ready to pay the Interest from July 1860 to July 1861 on the Scrip issued by the Graniteville Company" and indicates that payment would be made in the form of a check drawn upon "the Bank of the State in Charleston or the Bank of Hamburg."

Also includes letterbook, 1885-1886, documenting textile mill operations, and discussing origins of organized labor and counter-measures to be taken against it; the impact of a measles epidemic, ca. Jan. 1886; the value of mechanized operations in times of recession; the acquisition of books from Boston for a factory village library; and the purchase of Camperdown Mills. Other correspondents include Andrew Baxter Springs; Hammett's wife, Deborah Jane Bates Hammett; son-in-law, James Lawrence Orr; and daughters, Bettie B. Orr and Fannie.
