This collection of the Cocke family of "Bremo," Fluvanna County, Virginia includes account books, correspondence, business and plantation records of John Hartwell Cocke, Philip St. George Cocke, and Dr. Cary Charles Cocke. Collection also contains an undated "Record of correspondence at Bremo" listing letters 1814-1865; a copy of a letter, Charles Curtis Page to Daniel Grinnan, 1928 January 11, discussing the Troye paintings of Lexington and RoeBuck that hung at Bremo and RoeBuck's lineage, other animals at Bremo, Stonewall Jackson's coat retrieved by Joseph Bryan from a Spottsylvania farmer, and some miscellaneous recollections; and a photostat of a portion [of John Hartwell Cocke's diary?] 1865 March 10 (national day of thanksgiving fasting, and prayer), noting Sheridan's army passing through Bremo, and attributing the war so mutually destructive to North and South to the idolatrous devotion to tobacco.

The letters chiefly pertain to Troye's commission to paint portrait of General John Hartwell Cocke in military dress of the War of 1812 seated on his horse Roebuck. Other topics mentioned briefly include Philip St. George Cocke's Silver Creek property near Yazoo City, Mississippi, and the failure of his cotton crop; and Keene Richard's annual horse sale, in 1874, at which Major Thomas Doswell was present.

Earlier correspondence centers around Benjamin Oliver and Lucy Oliver of Hanover and Albemarle counties, Va., The majority of the correspondence was generated by their daughters Ann Carter Oliver and Lucy Williamson Oliver Cocke. Most of it concerns news of family and friends, health and local events. There are many references to the family of John Hartwell Cocke including mention of his travels and the death of Louisa Maxwell Holmes Cocke. Of interest are letters about the burning of Hampton by the British in 1813, objections by citizens of Prince George in 1833 to the girls of Cedar Park School teaching in a colored Sunday School, a 4th of July celebration in Norfolk in 1840,local political rallies for the election of 1844, the experiments of Carter Braxton and Corbin Braxton, 1842-1843,with the McCormick reaper, and an 1847 letter detailing problems with the William and Mary faculty. Correspondents include Sally Faulcon Cocke Brent, Sally Elizabeth Courtney Bowdoin Cocke, and Cary Charles Cocke.

Primarily papers of Walter Lloyd Fontaine (1787-1860), lawyer of Buckingham County, Va., including correspondence, 1810-1860, accounts, 1810-1861, and miscellaneous legal documents. Correspondents include Archibald Austin ([1772-1827] concerning abolitionists), William Sheridan Cabell ([1793-1862] concerning internal improvements), James Caskie ([1792- 1866] concerning the Bank of Virginia), Cary Charles Cocke (1814-1888) and John Hartwell Cocke ([1780-1866] concerning the construction of a dam by the James River and Kanawha Company near New Canton, Buckingham County), Walter F. Smith (concerning Hampden-Sydney College), and others (concerning Asbury Crenshaw (d. 1851) and Virginia Mills, Buckingham County). Accounts concern fees paid to Fontaine for legal services and fees paid by him for medical services, as well as fees paid to the Female Collegiate Institute, Buckingham County. Legal documents include land grants, deeds and agreements, many concerning Virginia Mills. Also included are estate papers of George Nicholas (d. 1812), David Ross (1740?- 1817), David Ross (d. 1821), and James Henry Fontaine (d. 1827), all of Buckingham County.

The papers contain correspondence of Cocke with Francis Henney Smith regarding V.M.I. and the outbreak of the Civil War, with Ballard Preston regarding business, from Edwin Gilliam Booth regarding a slave sale, from John Grant regarding wire fencing, and to John Bowdoin Cocke regarding cotton production the defense of the South, his resignation from the C.S.A. Army. The collection also contains a draft of an address arousing the South to action, 1860, notes on the government manufacture of arms, 1860, & a memorial resolution of his brigade on his death, 1861. There is also a pocket memoranda book, 1809-12, of John Hartwell Cocke, and a letter from Cary Charles Cocke to John B. Cocke regarding amnesty.

Cocke notes receiving a warrant for $500 from the Bursar for slating done by Simms. In a letter, 1836 Februay 20, Simms asks Cocke for $750 from Mr. Pendleton for work done at the University of Virginia and to endorse and send it to George L. Sampson in Richmond.

The Fontaine papers consist chiefly of correspondence and legal & financial papers of Walter Fontaine, a Buckingham Co. lawyer. Most are routine financial cases, collections for debt, and the settlement of estates including those of George Nicholas and Asbury Crenshaw. Financial papers contain considerable correspondence with Dean & Brown, Richmond tobacco merchants. There is very little personal correspondence except for letters of the Brown family, 1841-1894. Of interest are conflicting testimonies in the trial of a farmer for murdering a slave, an anti-John Marshall political address, 1789, surveyor plats of Fontaine land, a 1740 Goochland deed & a 1760 Albemarle deed. Among the correspondents are Charles Yancey, who comments on triumphant Whiggery in 1838, and John Hartwell Cocke & Cary Charles Cocke who object to the James River & Kanawha Canal Co.'s proposed dam at New Canton, Va. in 1849. The church records, 1827-1915, contain minutes of elder's sessions and congregational meetings which include financial statistics, baptismal records, & membership lists, as well as a manuscript history of the church, 1883, by J. Bentley Brown.
