Title: Angola and Botswana Records 1977-2000

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities relating to Botswana. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walked with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana (ELCB) in mission efforts. The records date from 1977-2000. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises three accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson, and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include typewritten business correspondence, reports, budgets, printed e-mail correspondence, partnership agreements, legal agreements, legal judgments, financial statements, audit reports, newsletters, and assistance applications. Subject matter includes student scholarships, theological education, mission cooperation, drought relief, and the split from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) of the ELCB predecessor, the Botswana circuit in the ELCSA's Western Diocese. While the series is primarily about mission efforts related to Botswana, the series does contain two folders of correspondence regarding the possibility of seminary students from Angola Lutheran Church studying at seminaries in the United States and correspondence related to peace efforts amidst civil strife in Angola. While this series includes records related to the ELCB and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission assistance relating to Mozambique. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walked with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mozambique (ELCM) in mission support. The records date from 1987-2001. This series comprises two accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson, and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include typewritten business correspondence and memoranda, financial correspondence, reports, financial statements, audit reports, meeting minutes, and a consultation report. Subject matter includes relating to the church in Mozambique; possibility of companion synod arrangement with the ELCA's Arkansas-Oklahoma synod; conflict within Mozambique church; terms of employment for missionaries; a well project, and scholarships for students to study theology at seminaries in United States. While this series includes records related to the ELCM and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records. Of note, the series only has minutes for the Joint Mission Board from 1988-2000.

This series comprises records created or retained by persons responsible for coordinating ELCA mission activities in South Africa. These records were generated during the course of documenting, monitoring, and publicizing projects, programs, and general updates pertaining to the efforts to practice the accompaniment model of mission whereby the ELCA's Division for Global Mission (DGM) walks with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA) in mission efforts. The records are from 1975-2001 with the bulk dating from 1988-2001. The date range precedes the existence of the ELCA because certain records were retained permanently by the area program director and as such were kept in this series for continuity purposes. This series comprises several accessions received into the ELCA Archives and as such includes records of the program directors mentioned in this series' background: the Rev. James L. Knutson, the Rev. Daniel W. Olson, and the Rev. Benyam A. Kassahun. Record types include typewritten business correspondence, a constitution, handwritten correspondence, financial reports, consultation proceedings, activity reports, budgets, financial statements, audit reports, meeting minutes, project proposals; assistance applications, newsletters, and trip reports. Records are arranged into two subseries, the first representing the church body in South Africa, the ELCSA, with which the ELCA works. Records include those related to the general assembly and church council of the ELCSA, its officers, program units of the ELCSA, projects administered by the ELCSA, as well as records related to theological education efforts in the ELCSA and records related to the individual geographic dioceses that comprise the ELCSA. The second subseries comprises records that represent direct ELCA work pertaining to South Africa. This includes the ELCA's involvement with ecumenical partners involved in accompaniment work with South Africa and an ELCA network designated to work on issues related to southern Africa. Subject matter of records includes apartheid, divestment, ecumenical relations, scholarships to study at ELCA seminaries in the United States, theological education, property management, development work, the companion synod program with the ELCA, and human rights. While this series includes records related to the ELCSA and its work, in many cases, there are gaps in the records. It appears that whatever was sent to DGM is what comprised the files. It cannot be ascertained if consistent efforts were made to fill in any gaps in the records.
