The video recordings in this collection document the Fifth National Festival of Black Storytelling held at Berea College November 12-14, 1987. Features of the event included concurrent storytelling sessions for various ages, the Second National Liars Contest, an informal "Swapping Ground" for storytellers, and scholarly lectures on the status of Blacks in Appalachia. Among the fifteen master storytellers participating were Mary Carter Smith and Linda Goss, cofounders of the National Festival of Black Storytelling. Among Berea College faculty who made presentations were Cleophus Charles, Loyal Jones, William H. Tallmadge, and William H. Turner. Other scholars included Edward J. Cabbell, William Hayden, and Robert P. Stuckert.

Title: William Turner World War II letters, 1942-1944.

Letters of William "Weenie" Turner of Pekin, Illinois, who served as Corporal in the C Company, 344th Engineer Regiment the United States Army during World War II. The collection includes letters from Corporal Turner to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William A. Wilson, of Pekin, Illinois, and his obituary from the Pekin newspaper. Turner served in England, North Africa, and Italy before killed in action 4 Feb 1944. Most letters discuss family, friends, and observations on his experiences. The collection also includes a 1944 report card from Pekin Community High School.

Title: Lusher Playground Project records, 1967-1974.

This collection consists of records of the planning of a multi-purpose playground on the uptown New Orleans campus of Robert M. Lusher Elementary School in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Included are handwritten and typed correspondence, financial records such as accounts, contributions and checks, architectural plans, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Architectural plans drawn by William K. Turner of the Tulane University School of Architecture include features such as a maze and a treehouse, as well as basketball courts and other playground equipment.
