Title: Charles Henry Martin papers, 1875-1945.

Charles Henry Martin attained the rank of Major General in the U.S. Army, then after his retirement in 1927, served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1931-1934), and as Governor of Oregon (1935-1938). This collection includes personal, political, military, and business correspondence, diaries, and memorabilia. Correspondence regarding the Ellis G. Hughes Estate is included. Also included is the certificate appointing him a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, August 22, 1917, signed by President Woodrow Wilson.

Contains the following type of materials: photographs. Covers the following war: Post-World War I (WWI). Contains photographs of the following military unit: Panama Canal Zone Command. General description of the collection: The Charles H. Martin photograph collection consists of photos throughout Martin's military career from 2nd lieutenant to major general in 1927. Martin was a West Point graduate, Class of 1887. He commanded the 86th Division during WWI. Most of the photos in this collection are of his command of the Panama Canal Zone (1924-1927). One nice photo is of Martin as a 2nd lieutenant, circa 1892. There is one photo of a review of the 86th Division in 1918. There are numerous photos of a visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to the Canal Zone in 1927 and of their ship, the Her Majesty's Ship (HMS) Renown.

Contains: personal correspondence (1899) and official correspondence (1898-1925); newspaper clippings and photocopies of clippins on: the 14th Regiment leaving Oregon (1898), published letters from Martin from the Philippines (1898), military victory in Manila (1899), the cleaning up of Manila (n.d.), Col. Aaron S. Daggett and the 14th Infantry (1900) and on Martin as governor (1959). Items on the 86th Division include: a history (n.d.), roster of officers (1918), training memorandum (1918) and correspondence on the 86th Division Association (1919). Special orders for the 92nd Division are found. Other items are: Map of front lines around Moselle (1918), text of a secret treaty with Italy (1918), a graphic representation of an infantry combat division (1918) and a provisional staff manual for U.S. Forces in France (1918). Educational materials from the Army General Staff College, A.E.F. in France (1917-18) include lectures on liaison, the automatic rifle, infantry support, approach formation of a battalion and various course outlines.
