The Robert Benney research materials include photographs, clippings, posters, playbills, and ephemera relating to his career as a portraitist of stage and screen personalities. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period.

Title: Thomas Albert Curry, Sr. papers, 1918-1933.

Collection consists of several items related to Curry's tenure as secretary to producer David Belasco. There are numerous articles and drafts of articles about the life and career of Belasco and his associates. There is also draft material for an additional volume to William Winter's Life of David Belasco, which was originally published in two volumes and covered Belasco's life up to 1917. This volume is the work of Winter's son Jefferson Winter. There is correspondence from Belasco and to Belasco and Curry from numerous associates, including Ruth Dayton, W. Somerset Maugham, and Lenore Ulric. There are other mementos including Curry's address book which was used in conducting business for Belasco. Portraits have been removed to the library's photograph collection.

Felix Mendelsohn scrapbook, 1927-1962, 1927-1935

Title: Felix Mendelsohn scrapbook 1927-1962 1927-1935

Felix Mendelsohn, Jr. (1906-1991), was an advertising copy writer based in Chicago. As a young man, Mendelsohn aspired to be a journalist. He found work writing promotional copy, booklets and brochures for various companies. He died in 1991 at the age of 84. The Felix Mendelsohn scrapbook holds a number of interviews with prominent actors and actresses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the age of 21, aspiring journalist Felix Mendelsohn, Jr. conducted a number of interviews with famous stage performers in which he asked each one to describe the "most thrilling moment" of his or her career. Mendelsohn developed these interviews into profiles, and hoped to sell the resulting series to a newspaper or magazine, but was unable to do so. He later compiled the profiles into a scrapbook, adding photographs of all the interviewees, some of which were inscribed to him. The performers profiled were Helen Hayes, Otis Skinner, Helen Gahagan, John Drew, Irene Bordoni, Richard Bennett, Helen Menken, John Cromwell, Ina Claire, Dennis King, Fay Bainter, Laurette Taylor, Grant Mitchell, Lowell Sherman, Ruth Draper, Florence Reed, Estelle Winwood, John E. Kellard, Wilton Lackaye, O.P. Heggie, Effie Shannon, Elsie Janis, Frank Keenan, Leo Carillo, Amelita Galli-Curci, Arthur Byron, Louis Mann, Lenore Ulric, and Raymond Hitchcock. Mendelsohn also included in his scrapbook rejection notes the proposed series received from several newspapers and publishing syndicates, dated between 1927-1935. More photographs are tucked into the back of the book, mostly actors who were not interviewed by Mendelsohn and prominent personalities outside the field of theater; many of these photographs are autographed and inscribed to Mendelsohn. Subjects include Pauline Frederick, H. L. Mencken, Frank Harris, Fritz Feld, Whitford Kane, William Faversham, Fortune Gallo, James O'Donnell Bennett, Oscar Tschirky ("Oscar of the Waldorf"), and Burl Ives.

Thomas Albert Curry (1900- ) was the private secretary of famed theater producer David Belasco (1853-1931) from 1914 to 1931. Curry's papers contain articles, drafts and notes dealing with the life and career of Belasco. The collection includes portraits of Belasco, his family and colleagues, and publicity shots from Broadway productions, compiled for an unpublished biography. Collection also includes correspondence to and from Belasco, as well as numerous mementos relating to the producer.

Title: Tunis F. Dean papers 1886-1930

The Tunis F. Dean Papers consist of Dean's correspondence files, some of his business and financial papers, some printed ephemera, fourteen scrapbooks, and a small group of photographs. Series I holds correspondence, both personal and professional, including letters from a number of actors and theater managers, particularly those in the Belasco theater organization. Series II holds a small group of personal papers, including a scrapbook devoted to the death of Dean's mother Catherine. Series III holds financial and other records of productions with which Dean was involved, starring actresses Blanche Bates, Frances Starr, and Leonore Ulric, among others. Also here are thirteen scrapbooks containing clippings and ephemera from Dean's career and the theatre world in general. While the collection is strong in theatre management, particularly regarding the trials and finances surrounding theatrical tours, it is perhaps equally important for the wealth of personal correspondence that reveals Dean's extensive network of friends and male lovers, and on-going relationship with the Catholic church.
