Three diaries (1851, 1854, 1854: some dated entries) and personal correspondence of Gold Rush miner, Charles van Houten, describing his travels from Sunbury, Ohio to Marysville, Calif. via Panama and experiences in California. Diaries provide details of travel, costs, dates of departure and arrival at various stops, money and gold nuggets sent home, and gold miner life such as his tent being invaded by Indians who drew arrows on him, smallpox raging all around, a murdered miner's body found, and the hanging of an Indian. Also includes four Adams & Co, Express bonds (two made out to Peter R. Van Houten). The bulk of the correspondence is between Charles Van Houten and Miss Harriet (Hattie) Jones who eventually marry. Includes their marriage certificate (Jan. 6, 1857 ) signed by minister Stephen Fant. Also includes correspondence (3 letters) of Rev. P. (Peter) R. Van Houten from Galena, Ohio [i.e. Rarden, Ohio], one addressed to brother Charles and two as the recipient from David Groesbeeck (New York, N.Y.) with accompanying printed material regarding Dutch heirs in a land dispute with Trinity Church of New York City titled: 'To the heirs of Anneka Jantz [sic] Bogardus."

"This is a matter which has been too long neglected," Jones writes. Jones also writes that he intends to visit Virginia in May and, if necessary, he can be of assistance in researching the claim. He also notes that he can obtain letters of introduction from J.J. Crittenden, Henry Clay, and other notable Kentuckians.

Beginning with the first meeting on 5 December 1776 the minute book continues until 6 January 1781. The minutes include the rules and regulations voted by the members and lists the officers and initiates. The minutes of the early years are significant because they discuss the reasons for establishment and the goals of the society. Founding members include Richard Booker, Daniel Fitzhugh, Theodorick Fitzhugh, John Heath, John Jones, Armistead Smith, Thomas Smith, John Stark, and John Stuart.
