He comments on the work of other writers, deriding the work of many contemporaries except James Joyce's "Ulysses." Harris describes Paris in 1914, predicts a German victory, and comments on his pro-German book. Letters to a soldier in post-war Germany elicit information on conditions there and despair over the future. His health, financial problems and a proposed edition of Shakespeare are also frequent topics. In addition the collection contains a photograph of Harris, prospectuses for the first two volumes of "My life and loves," a review of Huysman's "A rebours, " and notes for a lecture "Three modern figures, Nietzsche - Bernard Shaw - Walt Whitman."
