Most of the correspondence is directed to Henry Tazewell and Littleton Waller Tazewell. These records contain a typescript booklet with copies of letters from 1772-1866, including papers on the trial of Aaron Burr, letters of Aaron Burr and letters from prominent public figures. Two volumes are diaries of John N. Tazewell, 19 September 1847 - 24 September 1849 and 20 September 1848 - 1 January 1850. One volume is the household account book of Littleton Waller Tazewell, June 1836 - June 1837, and one volume is a record of tombstone inscriptions at St. Paul's Cemetery, Norfolk, Va., 1673 - 1859, compiler not established.

Consisting chiefly of family and personal papers, land and legal records of James Burchell Richardson and his descendants, especially William Henry Burchell Richardson. Contains invoices from various Charleston merchants and factors re purchase of goods and sale of cotton; land and legal records re Charleston, Clarendon and Sumter counties, including document, ca. 1855, re road maintenance in Clarendon District S.C., listing the eighteen commissioners, the road sections for which each was responsible, and number of slave and white hands assigned to each section; and invoice, ca. 19 Oct. 1858, of the Columbia Cotton Mill. Early papers include letter, 10 Jan. 1784, from William Richardson to Col. Joseph Kershaw (1727-1791) requesting a meeting to deliver titles to lots in the town of Camden, S.C., from Col. Joseph Habersham (1751-1815), "in conformity to your agreement with him of the 2d May 1783. I have to request that you will appoint a time and place to receive them, this evening if convenient as I wish to depart tomorrow morning. Some of your late conduct which has come to my knowledge puts it totally out of my power to wait on you at your house so that you'll excuse my desiring a meeting for the above purpose." Includes family letters depicting antebellum social life in South Carolina, and various sites in Europe, including northern Germany; South Carolina during the Civil War and Reconstruction; and state and local politics, including correspondence of Julianna A.M. Richardson re the inauguration of her husband, John Peter Richardson, as governor in 1886. Also includes correspondence, 1883-1884, between James Burchell Richardson and their son, Charles T. Richardson, a student at Holy Communion Church Institute, Charleston. Seven oversize items, 3 Apr. 1754-12 Apr. 1800 document land owned by Richard, John, and William Richardson in old Craven County, S.C., on the south side of the Wateree River: land conveyance, 4 Jan. 1785, of real estate from William Richardson (1743-1786) and Ann (1750-1810), his wife, of Camden District, S.C. to John Rutledge (1739-1800) of Charleston for eleven hundred pounds sterling. Rutledge purchased for that sum two plantations in Craven County on the south side of the Wateree River, one consisting of three hundred acres and the other of one hundred fifty acres. Besides bounding on the river and vacant lands, the former tract was bordered on one side by land of James Michie, while the latter tract was bordered by a Mr. Brown. The seals of William and Ann Guignard Richardson are still intact. Because William Richardson died the following year, his handwriting was later verified by Gen. Zachariah Cantey (1759-1882). Witnesses to the document were Elizabeth Fley and Isham Moore. However, it was not "sworn to and subscribed" until 2 February 1809, by which time Elizabeth Fley had become Elizabeth Ioor.

Personal correspondence, chiefly of members of the McDowell and Preston families (including Thomas Hart Benton), contains family and social news from Rockbridge County, Va., Kentucky, and St. Louis, Mo.; one letter includes a note from young Jessie Benton (Fremont). Business correspondence pertains to land claims in the Southern states and Ohio, and a fugitive slave; accounts concern slave hiring, school, stud horses, and cattle (including a livestock record); and miscellaneous business papers concern slave appraisals, Revolutionary War claims, and plantation management. Legal papers concern estate settlements, especially of Preston family members, custody, financial interests of Washington College, and land purchases in Augusta and Rockbridge counties, Va., with pertinent records and documentation. Military correspondence, 1797-1826, relates to the elder James McDowell's service as colonel of 8th Regt. Va. Militia, and its records for the War of 1812, some relating to courts-martial, and a discharge for John Floyd (1813). Political correspondence pertains to Virginia and national politics, the Democratic party, the War of 1812, the Staunton Convention of 1816, reasons to locate the University of Virginia at Lexington, the Virginia Constitutional Conventions of 1829-1830 and 1850-1851, military appointments in the Mexican War, temperance, and the tariff. Correspondents include Allen Trimble, William H. Cabell, John Tyler (Sr.), Robert Bland Lee, James Pleasants, James Barbour, John Floyd, Francis H. Smith, Robert Craig, Alexander H.H. Walker; and letter, 1870, of William Mahone to a constituent concerning Virginia railroads and the constitutional convention. Also include correspondence, 1823-1866, of various Rockbridge County residents re: education, horses, estate settlements, medical practice; letter, 1826, from William Cabell Rives re: medical treatment; and letters, 1859, from a man alleged to be mentally ill applying to John Letcher for legal help. Also include letters, 1861-1862, from James B. Dorman re: secession, the organization of 3rd Regt. Va. Included also are letters of a religious nature to friends and ministers; letters answering notes of sympathy upon the death of his wife; and a long series of letters to William H. Richardson, adjutant general of Virginia, to Governor John Letcher, and other officials, written while Danforth served as colonel of the 1st Virginia Militia defending the city of Richmond, 1863-1864. The letters to General Richardson are concerned with the reluctance of Danforth's men to stand guard, recommendations for courts-martial, requests for uniforms and supplies, and failure to call young government officials for their share of guard duty.
