L.L. (Leonidas La Fayette) Polk (1837-1892) of Anson County, N.C., was a planter; editor; merchant; Confederate officer in the 26th and 43rd North Carolina infantry regiments; Democrat and Populist; first North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture, 1877-1880; founder of the ; and vice president and president of the National Farmers' Alliance, 1887-1892. Progressive Farmer The collection can be divided into the following time periods: correspondence and other items, 1862-1864, relating to events leading up to Polk's two courts-martial during the Civil War, plus his small diary; letters, 1865, from Raleigh, N.C., where he was serving in the North Carolina legislature; papers documenting the years Polk and his family lived in Anson County, N.C., 1870-1877, where he operated a general merchandise store; papers concerning Polk's term as North Carolina's first Commissioner of Agriculture, 1877-1880; papers concerning various business ventures, 1880-1885, including efforts to sell a diphtheria cure in Boston, Mass., and New York, N.Y.; papers, 1886-1892, dealing with the founding of the , Polk's work with the Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union, his election to national offices of the Union, and his death; and papers, 1892-1919, of Polk's son-in-law, James W. Denmark, and of Clarence Poe relating to the and Poe's ultimate purchase of the paper in 1903, and a few Denmark family items. The addition of August 2010 consists of materials on similar topics, especially relating to the Populist Party and North Carolina politics in 1892 and the . Included are several 1892 letters that concern the election of Marion Butler as president of the National Farmers' Alliance. Other materials include tintype and cartes de visite portraits of L.L. The collection includes Noblin's correspondence, 1937-1940, documenting his search for biographical material on L.L. Polk (1837-1892), North Carolina's first commissioner of agriculture, founder of the "Progressive Farmer," and president of the National Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union; and copies of some Polk papers, 1891-1892. Among the correspondents are Alex M. Arnett, Samuel A. Ashe, H.E.C. Bryant, P.A. Carter, Josephus Daniels, R.A. Doughton, Thomas Dixon, John D. Hicks, Francis Joyner, J.J. Lane, James C. Malin, W.F. Marshall, Thomas Bedford Moseley, Edward A. Oldham, Carl C. Taylor, R.T. Vann, William Allen White, and P.M. Wilson. The copies of Polk items include typed transcripts of seven items from the Donnelly Papers at the Minnesota Historical Society, consisting of four letters from Polk to Ignatius Donnelly, one letter from Polk to A.L. Stomberg, and two letters from H.E. Taubeneck to Ignatius Donnelly.

This collection contains the professional papers of Stuart McGuire Noblin, including those related to his professorship at North Carolina State University, and on topics of his research, including farmers' movements, the National Grange, and the role of churches in constructive race relations. Also contained in this collection are Noblin's personal papers from his involvement in the North Carolina Chess Association. Stuart Noblin was a professor in the Departments of History and Political Science at North Carolina State University from 1947 to 1976. He also served as part-time University Archivist from 1957 to 1964, as well as chairman of the Committee on the History of the College, and was a member of the Faculty Senate from 1957 to 1961. Noblin was also active in the North Carolina Chess Association.

The Polk Family Papers, 1850-1961, contain correspondence, newspaper articles, recipes, printed booklets, typed manuscripts, and a nineteenth-century memory book relating to the personal life and professional activities of Leonidas Lafayette Polk and members and friends of his family. Included are a small number of documents concerning Polk's daughter Juanita Polk Denmark and the Turrentine family of Hillsborough, North Carolina. Polk family of North Carolina includes Leonidas Lafayette Polk (1837-1892), who was a North Carolina government official, Civil War veteran, politician, farmer, businessman, and journalist. Throughout his career, Polk supported and led campaigns on behalf of educational institutions and agricultural development. He organized the state's farmers to lobby for a state agricultural college; joined with the Watauga Club, they successfully established the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1887.
