The collection contains correspondence with virtually every prominent literary figure in Latin America during the mid-to-late Twentieth Century, including Pablo Neruda, Salvador Allende, Augusto Roa Bastos, Jaime Alazraki, Isabel Allende, Carlos Fuentes, Juan Rulfo, Nicanor Parra, and many others. Also includes correspondence with North American authors such as Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, as well as Linus Pauling.The collection also contains numerous manuscripts by Alegria and other Latin American authors, including Raul Barrientos, Jorge Bernales, Alejo Carpentier, Joaquim-Francisco Coelho, Roque Dalton, Humberto Diaz-Casanueva, Juan Armando Epple, Mario Antonio Espinosa, Ricardo Israel, Reynaldo Jimenez, Luis Merino, and Pablo Neruda. The collection also contains more than 3,000 photographs and slides of Alegria, his family, various authors and other literary figures, as well as images used in his various books. The collection includes a series of 31 political posters from the 1960's with additional posters for readings given by Alegria from the 1970's through the 1980's, as well as performances by Chilean cultural groups, such as Inti-Illimani. Box 39, folder 14 includes material removed from various books in the Fernando Alegría papers that were not included in the original processing of the papers. Included is an article by Luis Leal, typed poems by Jermain Flores Vera, and letters from Jorge Kattan Zablah, Maria Eugenia Urrutia, Alfonso Romano de Sant'Anna, and Enrique Ratinoff among others. There is also an unsigned typescript and a carbon typescript, "La cueca larga, " the latter by Fernando Alegría.

The Gary Snyder Papers document the personal and professional activities of Gary Snyder (1930- ), poet, essayist, translator, Zen Buddhist, environmentalist, lecturer, and teacher. Snyder is considered one of the most significant environmental writers of the twentieth century and a central figure in environmental activism. He wrote more than twenty books of poetry and prose including his forty-year work and for which he won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. The collection spans the years 1910-2003 (1945-2002 bulk) and continues to grow. Ginsberg writes to a friend and associate in Havanna in the aftermath of his notorious visit to Cuba, when he was deported by Cuban authorities after speaking openly about homosexuality. Ginsberg dwells on the circumstances of his ejection from Cuba throughout the correspondence, and also provides news of his travels since leaving the island. He describes traveling to Prague and Moscow and offers general impressions of travel in socialist countries. He recounts visiting with Russian poets Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Andrei Voznesensky and other young poets; asks after Nicanor Parra, and mentions fellow beat poets Gregory Corso and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. He mentions spending time with Bob Dylan and the Beatles in London. One of the letters includes a handwritten text of the poem "Message II" and with another Ginsberg included a four-page typescript of the important longer poem "The Change: Kyoto-Tokyo Express, " which appeared in the collection Planet News.

The Denise Levertov papers provide a remarkable window into the life of this important English-born, American poet. According to Kenneth Rexroth, Denise Levertov was "the most subtly skillful poet of her generation, the most profound, the most modest, the most moving." Her papers document the process of her writing, her relationships with others of her generation, and the role of this "poet in the world."The family papers (series 1), which feature substantial correspondence with Levertov's mother, with her former husband Mitchell Goodman and with her son, combine with Levertov's personal papers to offer a rich source for biographical study. The manuscripts (series 2) and notebooks (series 3) document Levertov's creative process, recording the development of individual poems from earliest drafts to printed texts. Levertov's correspondence (series 4) with other writers and public figures open numerous avenues into contemporary literary and social history. Especially important are the letters from fellow writers William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Hayden Carruth, Gael Turnbull, Eve Triem, and Susan Glickman. Also important is the correspondence with Levertov's longtime editor at New Directions, James Laughlin. The remainder of the collection contains Levertov's professional papers (series 5), accumulated printed materials, and personal artifacts. Taken together, these papers provide the researcher with as complete a portrait of Levertov and her times as is currently available.
