Handwritten note found in "A Collection of All Such Public Acts of the General Assembly, and Ordinances of the Conventions of Virginia Passed Since the Year 1768..." (published in 1785 and known as the Chancellor's Revisal); book owned by Philip Slaughter, but note is not in his handwriting. Content of note referenced a land law passed at the 1779 May session of the Virginia General Assembly setting up a timeline for the declaration of settlement and preemption certificates. Note refers to pages in the book on the acts dealing with this law and its extension, eventually to March 1884. See book in Filson's library for additional notes.

Includes papers relating to pension claims for service in the Revolutionary War, especially of Slaughter's father, Philip Slaughter (1758-1849), captain in the 11th Continental Regiment; business papers concerning personal debts, commodity prices, purchases, and slave sales; scattered legal papers and documents; and correspondence. Correspondence discusses the Canadian expedition of American General William Hull and fighting against the British and the Indians, casualties, British prisoners, the Virginia Constitutional Convention during 1829-1830, issue of counting slaves in legislative apportionment, deportation of free blacks, Virginia politics and various elections, Andrew Jackson and his cabinet, the Force Bill, Compromise Tarriff Bill, controversy over the Second Bank of the United States, financial regulations of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, consular regulations, the Virginia militia, and matters surrounding the presidential campaign of 1860. Also includes statistics concerning the Orange and Alexandria Railroad.

Fragment of a diary, 1777, kept by Philip Slaughter probably while serving in the 11th Virginia Regiment which concerns the campaign in Pennsylvania. The dairy mentions John Marshall and also includes Slaughter's account for 1837.

Title: Towles family papers, 1806-1954.

Collection contains the papers, 1806-1849, of Judge Thomas Towles, attorney of Henderson, Ky., who emigrated from Va. in 1806, served as judge of the Illinois Territory in 1816, and founded the Henderson, Ky. firm of Towles and Soaper, exporters of tobacco. Included is correspondence of family and friends; accounts; appraisal of the estate of Colonel Joseph Cabell; papers of Towles and Soaper, including circular letters and prices current from English importers, 1840-1848, an 11 Aug. 1845 letter and price current from Fellows Johnson Co., New Orleans, accounts, 1841-1848, and insurance policies on the tobacco factory near Henderson and on shipments of tobacco to New Orleans, 1840-1847. Also included are papers, 1842-1917, of Walter Alves Towles containing correspondence, family history, genealogy and his diary for a 1905 visit to New York; autobiographical sketch of Susan Daniel Anderson Towles and her genealogical correspondence about the Anderson and allied families of Marshall, Daniel, Goode, Jefferson, Roane, Wilson, and others; genealogical correspondence, genealogical society membership applications, and addresses of Susan Starling Towles; and the correspondence of Lillia Towles, including letters to Mary Lucy Goode Towles, discussing family and routine matters.
