This is a collection consisting mostly of personal letters written to various members of the John Barber family. The letters cover the years from 1824 through 1856. Apparently, John Barber moved several times, since his name appears with several different addresses. The letters provide information on family life and on life in general in rural villages and towns of that period.

Collection comprises one letter written in two parts, the first composed by Potter's wife, Cynthia, and the second by Stephen, both directed to her father, John Barber, and sister, Amelia. Cynthia's topics include their travel to West Union and her opinions about various forms of transportation. She also describes their close relationships with their neighbors, including the Charter and Davis families; slavery ("There is not as many slaves here as I supposed....") and the availability and cost of household help in the area; as well as being frightened by a drunken visitor to her house. Stephen details the stability of the school, including numbers of students, subscription rates, student opinions on his teaching, and building projects being undertaken so that the school may become a seminary. He also discusses the price and quality of boots available for purchase.

Contents of the folder on Claude McKay include: an archive of correspondence (personal and professional)about Claude McKay written by artists and authors who knew McKay during his association with the periodicals the "Masses" and the "Liberator." The letters are all addressed to Wayne Cooper, written in response to his inquiries during preparation of the Passion of Claude McKay, as well as an earlier biography Mr. Cooper wrote about Claude McKay. Also included is a copy of a typed letter (4 pgs.), written by Claude McKay to Max Eastman (he notes in ink holograph "copy" on the first page.) The letter presents McKay's political views in 1925, particularly his feelings towards Communism.
