The collection contains letters (1805-1834) to Peachy Ridgway Gilmer, some concerning George Rogers Clark, José Francisco Correia da Serra, and the education of relatives' children, from William Armisted Burwell, Alfred H. Dashiell, Dr. Charles Everett, Francis Walker Gilmer, Harmer Gilmer, James Blair Gilmer, Thomas Walker Maury, Franklin Minor, Peter Minor, William Radford, Fleming Saunders, David Watson, and David Yancey. There are three letters (1814) from Francis Walker Gilmer to George Divers, Martha Jefferson Randolph, and George Ticknor (concerning the pronunciation of words in Virginia); and three undated essays by Francis Walker Gilmer concerning fire, vapors, and the contract theory of government. Also includes notes (1833-1889) of Emma Walker Gilmer Breckinridge and Peachy Ridgway Gilmer concerning the compilation of his papers; a letter (1790) of Thomas Walker Gilmer to Dr. George Gilmer and Lucy Walker Gilmer; and a letter (1807) of Martha Walker Divers to Mary House Gilmer.

The collection contains a letter, 1860 Aug. 6, Sweet Chalybeate Springs, Va., Dr. James L. Cabell to Franklin Minor, of 'Ridgeway.' Cabell, writing from Sweet Chalybeate Springs, comments on its virtues as compared with Hot Springs; he mentions the food and house full of "sprightly & gay people." He then discusses at length the "action of the faculty" [of the University of Virginia] in the case of his friend Maury's son Dick [Richard Lancelot Maury] for insubordination and, apparently, drunkeness. There is also a letter, 1932 November 21, Ashland, Virginia, Nancy Byrd Turner, to her cousin, Professor William Mynn Thornton, University of Virginia. There is also a letter, 1936, June 17, Monroe Hill, University, E. Carter Thurman to Mr. [A.L.] Hench. Also, a pamphlet regarding the reunion of the Confederate Veteran Alumni of 1861-1865, University of Virginia, Commons Hall, June 10, 1912.

This is a ms. copy by Franklin Minor mailed to Sherard Clemons, of Wheeling, Va., member of the board. There is also a printed sheet, dated July 1, 1846, of qualifications for in-state students at the University of Virginia. It is signed, in print, by J. L. Cabell, Chairman of the Faculty. The sheet is addressed to Thomas Bambrick [?], Brooke, Va. and is postmarked July 16.

In addition to news of family and friends subjects include life of a naval surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Trenton of the European fleet, 1880; Charles Colcock Jones' history of the Chatham Artillery and the battle of Ocean Pond (Olustee); and the European tour, 1878, of General John E. Roller and Maggie Shacklett Roller. Brief topics of interest include the Bank bill and political parties in 1841; a New Year's Day reception at the White House, 1879; the election of 1880; Mt. Vesuvius in eruption, 1880; mining in Augusta County, 1869; Ridgeway School, Albemarle County, 1854; and the difficulties of an unmarried woman finding a position to support herself and her mother, 1896. Photographs include Lucien Heneberger as a University of Virginia student, 1871, and Sallie Watson Magruder as a student at "Piedmont," Keswick, Albemarle County, 1866. Genealogical material concerning the Effinger, Shacklett and Rector families completes the collection. General Samuel H. Lewis, Matthew Fontaine Maury, Thomas W. Gilmer, and Franklin Minor are correspondents.
