Browne, Maurice, 1881-1955. Morley's First Sketch of English Literature papers, 1909 and 1936.
Title:
Morley's First Sketch of English Literature papers, 1909 and 1936.
The papers relate to Browne's preparation, commissioned by Cassell & Co., of an augmented edition of Henry Morley's A first sketch of English literature. They consist of letters and brief bio-bibliographical sketches by and about authors, and drafts, galley proofs, and page proofs of new sections by Browne. The last section on living authors was unfinished when the project was halted by Browne's illness. The 1912 "new and enlarged edition" contains none of Browne's material, and none was ever. published. Also included is correspondence from 1936, with Desmond Flower and H.F. Morley, concerning the possible publication of a small textbook on Victorian literature based largely on a portion of his old manuscript.

[2] 1913, August 16 [4 p.].--Gabriel Harvey's annotated copy of Thomas Speght's edition of Chaucer has been found and contains proof that "the date now everywhere accepted for the first draft of Hamlet, 1602, is wrong." Gives his reason for believing contrary to "Lee and the rest" that Shakespeare's father could write. [3] 1914, January 18 [3 p.].--States problems connected with the William Drummond books and manuscripts. Comments on Professor Raleigh as a lecturer and on his book about Shakespeare. States that someone should write about Sir John Harrington. [4] 1914, March 9, [1 l.].--He discusses books published at the Shakespeare Head Press. Comments on the Shakespearian criticism of Mrs. Charlotte Stopes. [5] 1915, January 29 [2 l.].--He discusses the distribution of an edition of Aphra Behn's works recently published by the Shakespeare Head Press. Comments on Robert Grant Martin. [7] 1916, April 15 [2 p.].--Sends a photograph. States that people use to mistake him for Mark Twain. He does not feel qualified to answer Sherman's inquiry about the staging of Shakespearean plays. [8] 1917, February 4 [2 p.].--He sends Sherman a pamphlet of verses. He discusses Simon Forman and says "Nobody, so far as I know, has examined his Ms. collection." [9] 1917, November 8 [2 p.].--He discusses his friend, George Gissing and sends Sherman a note written by Gissing. [10] 1918, November 26 [2 p.].--He agrees that Stratford should be made a world center for Elizabethan studies, and says he hopes that after the conclusion of the war funds will be available for this project.

Autograph letter signed from Frederick Warde, Brooklyn, New York, to unidentified recipient. [manuscript], 1914 or 1915?
Warde writes that he has no record of anything he may have written on the "Baconian madness," but it is possible he may have been quoted on the subject in the local press. He writes "I am most emphatic on my faith in "The Master," ... and ridicule the various theories that the past half century has developed to diminish his glory... I have made no special research myself, but base my arguments on the work the poet's biographers ... especially Sir Sydney Lee." He also mentions his knowledge of Warwickshire country, "I was born and lived in Oxfordshire." Letter addressed "Dear Mr. [crossed out]." Month and year of letter also crossed out but it appears to be either January or February 25, 1914 or 1915. Addressed from 1720 Ditmas Ave, Brooklyn, NY.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.
