Six letters received by the Solicitor of the Treasury (Charles B. Penrose) from the War Dept., 1840-1841. Correspondents include; R.M. Young, H.W. Miller, R.E. Lee, Colonel Fotten, and John Bell. These primarily discuss financial matters of various Latter-day Saints, including Joseph Smith. Sixteen letters and statements received by the Solicitor of the Treasury from U.S. attorneys for the District of Illinois, 1842-1846. Correspondents include; J. Butterfield, Walter Cunningham, Sylvester Willard, O.S. Beach, the High Council of the Church in Nauvoo, Illinois, and David L. Gregg. Major topics: Debts of H.W. Miller and Joseph and Hyrum Smith; preparations to prosecute them; statements of Butterfield's charges; High council's proposal to pay the debts in full; Jospeh Smith's estate. Eleven letters sent by the Solicitor of the Treasury, 1841-1851. Correspondents include; Montgomery Blair, John Bell, J. Butterfield, David L. Gregg, Archibald Williams, and H.H. Stuart. Major topics: Debt of Joseph Smith and efforts to arrest him, bandruptcy proceedings against Joseph and Hyrum Smith; final settlement of the case; the Joseph Smith estate. Reports: Five reports of U.S. attorneys and U.S. marshalls, 1842-1852, pertaining to legal debt proceedings against Joseph Smith. Two other reports, 1845-1850, relating to the indictment in Illinois of Brigham Young and other apostles on charges of counterfeiting.
