Title:
Autograph letters signed from Joel Henrietta (Mendez) Pye, [England] and Paris, to Mr. and Mrs. Garrick [manuscript], 1774-1779.
Mrs. Pye seems to have been one of Mrs. Garrick's consultants on Paris fashions. In her letter to Garrick, no. 34, November 21, 1774, she also comments on the French theatre and opera, Préville and Mlle. Rocourt, her visit to Voltaire who spoke with approval of Garrick's alteration of Hamlet; she had seen Foote and heard a rumour that Bickerstaffe had brought out a comic opera at Marseilles. In no. 33, September 17, [1776], she writes of having called on Mrs. Montagu. In no. 35, February 8, 1779, she writes on the death of Garrick.

Title:
Album, 1766-1818.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of over two hundred newspaper clippings, printed pamphlets, and handwritten poems, songs, riddles, epigrams, and epitaphs, primarily lighthearted, satirical, or sentimental. The volume begins with a substantial collection of newspaper clippings. Clippings dated in the 1760s include letters to the editor regarding politics and Parliament, many written by "Thersites," including one criticizing a proposal to stimulate trade with American colonies; copies of General Charles Lee's correspondence with General John Burgoyne in 1775 about the colonies; a letter by Benedict Arnold dated 1780 "to the inhabitants of America"; and other newspaper clippings concerning the American Revolution. Some of the clippings are annotated, including a poem above which is written, "Horace Earl of Orford to Lady Powis." This section of the manuscript also includes many satirical verses on political and social subjects, including many poems by "P. Phillips." The volume also contains a substantial number of verse prologues and epilogues to theatrical plays by Edward Topham; Samuel Foote; and George Colman; songs with titles such as An ode to Mr Pitt; The Parliament man; State of slavery in the British West India Islands; The last day, by Jonathan Swift; and numerous verse epitaphs. In numerous places, names of public and political persons have been written in where they have been disguised or omitted in the printed text. These clippings are followed by primarily handwritten satirical, sentimental, and serious poems, epigrams, epitaphs, and riddles, many written by or about members of the nobility, often in the form of occasional poems on social subjects. These include The squirrels of Hagley Park to Miss Warburton's squirrel, "written by George Lord Lyttleton in the name of his son who was then courting Miss Warburton"; To Lady Pembroke with an artificial rose by Lord Holland then Mr Fox in the year 1725; On the marriage of Bishop Warburton; To Lady Mary Coke ill with St Anthony's fire by Horace Walpole; several poems by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu; and On a young woman found dead in the fields near London, "by Miss Young daughter of Sir William Young." The collection also includes numerous verses by David Garrick; Henry James Pye; George Byron; George Canning; "Rev. Mr. Arden"; "Captain Morris"; and William Spencer. Several entries are related to theatrical subjects, including a list of resolutions "formed to promote regularity at Shanes Castle during the meeting for acting Cymbeline"; Epilogue to the Fashionable Friends, spoken by Anne Damer; and, in print, Epilogue to the theatrical representation at Strawberry Hill, written by Johanna Baillie and spoken by Anne Damer in 1800. Other verses concern Napoleon Buonaparte and Waterloo; the funeral of Joshua Reynolds; the death of Horatio Nelson; and the pleasures of town and country life.
