Rules

John Mason Young was born in Lewisberg, Tennessee, in 1874. He entered the ancestor institution of the University of Florida in 1896 and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1898. After service in the Spanish American War, he taught engineering and physics, and then entered Cornell University from which he received two masters degrees in engineering in 1902 and 1904. He worked on drawings for various railroad facilities in New York, Ohio, and unidentified locations. In 1908, he became professor of engineering and college engineer at the College of Hawaii, which later become the University of Hawaii. He began Pacific Engineering Company the same year. Young retired from the University in 1940, the last of the original thirteen faculty members. He died in 1949 and Pacific Engineering was dissolved upon his death.

Title: John Mason Young architectural drawings, 1889-1949 1909-1939. 1889-1939.

Consists of blueprints and blueline prints for building projects which Pacific Engineering Company, a company organized and directed by John Mason Young, beginning in 1908, over the approximately forty-one years of the company's existence. In addition the papers include drawings of College of Hawaii and University of Hawaii buildings and plans for development for which Young was responsible as college engineer. Buildings for which there are drawings in the papers include Hawaii Hall, then known as Main Building; Library, for which only one drawing seems to exist; Biological Sciences Building, now named Dean Hall; Social Sciences Building, now named Crawford Hall; Dramatics Laboratory, an addition to Farrington Hall, now demolished; Home Economics Laboratory, now named Miller Hall; and an undated but early grain drying facility. Drawings for other buildings in Honolulu built by Pacific Engineering include: Castle Hall, Punahou School; Blaisdell Hotel; Theo H. Davies block; Empire Theatre; Church of Christ, Scientist, Punahou Street; and the S.M. Damon Building (also known as Bishop Bank, Bishop Trust, and First Hawaiian Bank).
