Evarts family papers, 1753-1960 (bulk 1798-1901)

Title: Evarts family papers 1753-1960

The papers consist of correspondence, writings, legal and financial material, congressional papers, family memorabilia, and other papers of various members of the Evarts family of Vermont, Boston, and New York. The principal figures, however, are Jeremiah Evarts (1781-1831), author, editor, lawyer, and philanthropist, and his son, William Maxwell Evarts (1818-1901), lawyer and statesman. The papers of Jeremiah Evarts relate to his work and writings on Congregational orthodoxy, his travels for the American Board of Foreign Missions, and his efforts on behalf of American Indians. His correspondents include family members, fellow members of the Yale Class of 1802, and many well-known clergymen, lawyers, statesmen, and missionaries.

Terry family. Terry and Bacon families papers, 1789-1919.

Title: Terry and Bacon families papers, 1789-1919.

Primarily correspondence among several generations of a Hartford and New Haven, Connecticut, family. The correspondence describes daily life of an upper middle class family, a number of whom became doctors, lawyers and ministers and lived and traveled all over the world. Adrian R. Terry wrote to his family while in Ecuador, 1931-1932, trying to establish his medical practice there. He received numerous letters in return. Of particular note are bills for medical supplies shipped from New York City to Adrian in South America. Alfred Terry described his studies at Yale, 1817-1819, and with Judge Gould in Litchfield, Conn., 1823-1824. Charles A. Terry wrote from Cleveland, Ohio, where he practiced as a physician. Catherine Terry Bacon and Leonard Bacon raised eleven children all of whom carried on a correspondence with each other and with their mother. Their children were Rebecca T. Bacon, who was a noted educator, Leonard W. Bacon, George B. Bacon (who in 1855 sailed to Hong Kong and Shanghai), Thomas R. Bacon and Edward W. Bacon who were ministers, Francis Bacon who was a physician in Galveston, Texas, Theodore Bacon who was a lawyer, Alfred T. Bacon who was a cattle farmer, Ellen B. Bacon Closson, and Alice M. Bacon who taught in Virginia and Japan and founded a nurses training school in Hampton, Virginia for African-American women. Daughter Katherine W. Bacon married Eugene Smith, a New York City prison reformer. Of note is correspondence from Leonard and Leonard W. to their family while they were traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East in 1850-51. Among the more noted correspondents are Samuel L. Clemens, Edward Everett, Rutherford B. Hayes, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Dean Howells, Lydia Sigourney, Charles Dudley Warner and Noah Webster.

The papers contain the correspondence of Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright (1792-1854), bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and letters of two generations of the Wainwright family of Boston and New York City. Family members represented include prominent tobacco merchant Peter Wainwright of Liverpool, England and his wife Elizabeth Mayhew (1759-1829), daughter of Rev. Jonathan Mayhew (1720-1766); their children Bishop Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright and his wife Amelia Phelps; Peter Wainwright, Jr., treasurer of the Provident Loan and Trust Company of Boston and his wife Charlotte Lambert, and Elizabeth Wainwright, wife of noted obstetrician Walter Channing.

Title: Harriet Wadsworth letters, 1785-1791.

Letters written by Harriet to her parents, Jeremiah and Faith Wadsworth, and her brother Daniel Wadsworth from New York City, Philadelphia, and Norwich and Lebanon, Connecticut. In a letter dated March 21, 1785, she apologized to her father for her poor spelling and promised not to read any more novels until she was sixteen.

Title: Thompson R. Harlow papers, 1939-1992.

Thompson R. "Tom" Harlow was associated with CHS for over 40 years. Most of that time was spent as Director and Director Emeritus. Among his papers is a variety of personal and professional correspondence, talks given, and research collected. Some of the material relates to clubs Harlow belonged to, including the Acorn Club and the Columbiad Club. Harlow researched a number of individuals, predominantly painters and engravers, such as Joseph Steward, Gerrit Schipper, William Page, Abel Buell, William Phelps, Daniel Wadsworth, Bernard Romans, and Amos Doolittle. Additionally, Harlow researched John Trumbull's epic poem, M'Fingal and the furniture donated to CHS by Frederick K. Barbour. Research was done on portraits of Lemuel Grosvenor and Eleazar Wheelock, both painted by Joseph Steward. The correspondence was between Harlow and many individuals. One of his long-time correspondents was friend and one-time CHS employee, William Warren. Notes from many of the talks Harlow gave may be found within the collection. Some relate to his research topics, and others are about CHS in general. Slides and photographs (some reproduction) are included.

Correspondence among members of the Wadsworth, Terry, Bacon, and Russell families of Hartford, Lebanon, and Middletown, Connecticut. The bulk of the correspondence was written by or to Daniel, Catherine and Harriet Wadsworth, children of Jeremiah and Mehitable Russell Wadsworth. Daniel wrote regularly to his mother and his sisters, several times from Montevideo in Uruguay, keeping them up to date on his activities; Harriet's letters were primarily written to her sister Catherine. Mehitable evidently knew Lydia Huntley (later Sigourney), as there are several letters from her in the collection. Catherine Wadsworth married Nathaniel Terry. Among her correspondents were her cousin Decius Wadsworth, her husband Nathaniel, Faith Trumbull Wadsworth, Susan Johnson, and Catherine's sons Charles A. and Alfred Terry. Hannah Russell, Mehitable's sister, is represented by letters from her niece Catherine Wadsworth and to her cousin and brother. Many of her letters are unaddressed, do not contain a salutation and are undated, making it difficult to determine if they were ever sent. Hannah also wrote poetry and essays which comprise part of the collection. Additional documents, mostly correspondence, exist for other branches of the family and other individuals. These include a commission to Nathaniel Terry and a letter; letters from Leonard Bacon to his wife Catherine E. Terry Bacon; from Thomas Rutherford Bacon to his mother and father; a penmanship document marked Samuel Russell; letters to Nabby Wadsworth; and letters to members of the Rawson family.

Incoming and outgoing correspondence, legal records including plot plans, deeds, agreements, and the estate records of Mehitable, Jeremiah and Faith Wadsworth, accounts, bills and receipts kept by Daniel Wadsworth, merchant and philanthropist of Hartford, Connecticut. Correspondents include his nephew Quentin C. Terry, artist Thomas Sully, Decius Wadsworth, and James Whitelaw. Daniel's letters from 1792-1793 to his parents describes Bermuda where he had taken his sister Harriet for her health. Among his legal papers is the act of incorporation of the Hartford Orphan Asylum, of which Daniel was a trustee. Extensive records of Daniel's own estate settlement includes an inventory and appraisal of the estate and a record of sales of items not distributed in his will. John Bunce, John F. Morris and J. Hammond Trumbull were trustees of Daniel's estate. A small number of unrelated items includes a letter written by Daniel Putnam in 1818.

The bulk of the collection consists of deeds and other land agreements involving Daniel Wadsworth of Hartford, Connecticut. Among his purchases was land in the Western Reserve (Ohio), the burying ground in Hartford, and land in Middletown, Windsor, Tolland, Columbia and Chatham, among other locales. Many of these instruments include Nathaniel Terry as either seller, buyer, or co-owner or co-buyer. The remainder of the documents, which includes wills, summons, mortgages, agreements and other land transfer documents, have been organized by either family name or county. There are documents related to the Adams family, Hale family, the Bunce family, John M. Niles, the Turner family, Jeremiah Wadsworth and Gideon Welles. The bulk of the properties and individuals lived in Hartford. The county materials are organized into Hartford County, the Town of Berlin, and Middlesex, New Haven and New London counties. Also found with the collection were notes on various births, marriages and deaths, mostly arranged by family, namely Keith, Lyman, Muzzy, and Marcy.
