The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

Primarily correspondence and court records of a Stratford, Connecticut, lawyer and politician. Personal correspondence is between family members including his father Samuel Johnson, his wife Ann, and his children Sarah, Gloriana Ann, Robert Charles and Samuel William. His political correspondence consists of letters concerning the Stamp Act, letters about British, American and Connecticut politics with such notables as Eliphalet Dyer, Jedediah Elderkin, Jeremiah Wadsworth, Silas Deane, Jonathan Trumbull, Jared Ingersoll and Tench Coxe. As agent for the Colony of Connecticut to the court of King George from 1767-1771, Johnson sent regular reports to the General Assembly along with frequent letters to his family. As a lawyer and judge, he kept correspondence, case notes, court dockets and memoranda books relating to County and Supreme Court cases in which he was involved. Johnson also kept memo books while he was in New York City serving on the Stamp Act Congress and while serving as Senator for Connecticut. A significant portion of the collection consists of court proceedings, land survey, deeds (including those of John Mason), testimony, petitions to the King, court briefs, memorials from the Mohegan Indians to the Connecticut General Assembly, reports and minutes of the COmmissioners for the United Colonies of New England, and lists of Indians, both Pequot and Mohegan, gathered by Johnson in presenting what was called the Mohegan Case to the Privy Council. The Mohegans protested the settlement of lands they deemed theirs. Johnson was also involved in the settlement of the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania and the ensuing compromise between the two states.

Title: Hugh Ledlie, letter, New York, to Samuel Gray, Windham, Conn., 1765, October 9.

Hugh Ledlie a shopkeeper in Hartford, Connecticut and captain during the French and Indian War was a prominent member of the Windham, Connecticut Sons of Liberty during the Stamp Act crisis. Ledlie was probably involved in the intimidation of Nathaniel Wales in Windham which convinced him to resign his post as stamp agent. On September 18, 1765, another stamp agent, Jared Ingersoll, was approached by two groups totalling over 1,000 men. Faced with this incredible outpouring of hostility, Ingersoll resigned his post as well. Following this incident, the Connecticut legislature voted to send Eliphalet Dyer, William Samuel Johnson, and David Rowland to the Stamp Act Congress. Dyer was a prominent resident of Windham who served in the General Assembly before being appointed to the Governor's Council. Ledlie writes of accompanying Dyer to the Stamp Act Congress. They arrived on October 2, five days before the Congress convened. Ledlie writes that these men will determine the fate of the British colonies in North America. He refers to November 1, the day the Stamp Act is to go into effect, as: "that fattal Day which is Dreded by Every Socalled thinking man" and expresses his hope that "the present Congress will do something worthy Such a Sett of Smart Men as they appear to me to be ..."
