Letter, Feb. 1815, John Black to Richard Seldon, [Va.], inquiring re Seldon's God-daughter "formerly Miss Sarah Conway Ewell" and delivery of certain slaves brought from Virginia; paper, 6 June 1829, in which Ann Mangum gives consent for Ned, her slave, to join Little River Presbyterian Church and list of members in 1832; labor contract, 1866; emigration / immigration matters include naturalization documents, 1797, for John Blair of Great Britain, and 1806, for John Black, of Scotland; and letter, 7 Dec. 1845, Mesopotamia [Ala.], R[obert] Creswell to Dr. John H. Davis, in which Creswell urges him to migrate, and reports of acquaintances in the area. Political papers include letters, 1868, John H. Davis to [John in Illinois?] re S.C. political situation, Reconstruction, and Constitutional Convention in Charleston; letters, 1875, to Gov. Daniel H. Chamberlain; letter, 23 Apr. 1890, Emma Davis to [Jack?], at South Carolina College, re note from Dr. [John M.] McBryde alerting her to Jack's participation in a demonstration against Ben Tillman, expressing her disapproval of his behavior due to the support it would generate for Tillman; other topics include Furman University, [Laurensville Female Academy?], weather, opinions of Reconstruction candidates re African American vote. John Black account book, 1825-1836 and 1861-1877; oversize scrapbook, 1852-1961, including original letters, accounts, etc.; and lettersize scrapbook, 1856-1935, re Laurens County history [previous three described separately]; and oversize land papers, 1754-1825, including document fragment, 30 July 1796, of land conveyance of John Caldwell, Sr.; and 24 items, Ninety-Six District and Laurens County, S.C., documenting transactions involving Abercrombie, Brown, Cannon, Copeland, Dandy, Dendy, Dial, Gillman, Hunter, Jones, Robinson, Rodgers, Watson, Wilkinson, and Williams families.
