This collection of papers and correspondence contains information on the religious, humanitarian, social, and economic influence of the Quakers in American life. A large portion of the collection consists of letters, approx. 2,000, 1785-1845, from John and Ann Cox of Burlington, N.J., to Dr. Joseph and Susannah Parrish of Philadelphia. There are also letters of William Penn, Israel Pemberton, James Pemberton, John Pemberton, John Rodman, Benjamin Lightfoot, John Bringhurst, Hannah Lloyd, George Mifflin, William Logan, David Barclay, John Fothergill, Roberts Vaux, Dolley Madison, and numerous others, 1700-1840. There are monthly meeting reports, broadsheets, and papers, 1700-1847, pertaining to religious doctrine, discipline, moral precepts, humane treatment of the Indians, abolition of slavery, and economic affairs. The papers of John Jacobs, member of Assembly for Chester County; Joseph Jacobs, saddler; Israel Jacobs, weaver, member of Congress, 1791; Isaac Jacobs, mayor of Philadelphia, 1767-1768; Benjamin Jacobs, surveyor, appointed by the Continental Congress to sign and number bills of credit, 1776. Among the papers are patents of land granted to early pioneers, one issued to Clement Dungan, Bucks County, 1684, signed by William Penn; another to Joseph Tanner, 1681, signed by William Parr; and a map of land on Delaware Bay, N.J., laid out and surveyed by John Woolidge and John Budd, 1691, containing a list of names of settlers. There are also records of the names of the first purchasers of land within the extended boundaries of Bedford, Sussex, Cumberland, Northumberland, Westmoreland, Philadelphia, and Bucks counties, on the Allegheny and Susquehanna rivers, on the Perkiomen, Yellow and Briar creeks, and other localities, 1729-1770, and an agreement pertaining to purchase of land in Nova Scotia, 1766. There are letters and documents of William Maclay, David Rittenhouse, Michael Hillegas, Edward Shippen, H. Vanderslice, John Robinson, Robert H. Morris, James Hamilton, Thomas Lawrence, Owen Biddle, Jacob Duché, Robert Bass, Nicholas Scull, John Lukens, Joseph Hilbon, treasurer of Pennsylvania Hospital, and many others, 1744-1769. Strettel Jones, Francis Johnston, commissioner to negotiate with the Indians, Benjamin Lightfoot, mobbed as a Tory, Jacob Richardson, who conducted the British army into Philadelphia, and others.

The majority of materials in this collection relate to surveys completed by Samuel, Benjamin (1726-1777), Thomas (1728-1793), Thomas Jr. (1779-1817), Benjamin Head (1787-1824), and Jacob Lightfoot (1793-1857). Papers include land records such as warrants, surveys, orders to survey, and indentures. Also included are correspondence, field books, and receipts that document the work of Samuel, Benjamin, Thomas (1728-1793), and Thomas Lightfoot Jr. (1779-1817), as well as their associates Benjamin Parvin, Benjamin Jacob, Andrew Lytle, and Mordecai Yarnall. There are also land and surveyor records for Thomas Lightfoot (1742-1821), Jesse Lightfoot, and Thomas Montgomery Lightfoot. Peppered throughout the surveyor records are personal correspondence, land papers, and records for estate administration. Also included is a brief journal describing the religious experience of Ruthanna Rutter, which passed into the Lightfoot family through Sarah Lightfoot Hughes.
