Series I includes one file of obituary and memorial articles and thirty-two files of correspondence, in-coming and out-going, reflecting Pat's involvement with a wide range of Jewish political and cultural organizations, as well as personal correspondence. Also included is a small number of letters addressed to or written by other Jewish Labor Committee and Jewish Labor Bund officers and staff, which came into Pat's possession in the course of his work. Series II includes a substantial amount of material illustrating Pat's work with the Jewish Labor Committee, manuscript and printed reports and essays on a variety of topics related to the Holocaust and Jewish survival, and records of his travels. Also included are a small number of documents preserved by Frieda Pat dated after her husband's death in 1966.

Isaiah Minkoff served as Executive Secretary of the Jewish Labor Committee, Executive Director of the General Jewish Council, and the Executive Director of the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council (NJCRAC -- later NCRAC).. In addition to his responsibilities in organizational work, Minkoff continued contact with people around the world, many of whom he had assisted in the Holocaust and postwar years, and Russian-speaking socialists who had been the inspiration of his youth. While they are very incomplete, and mostly date from Minkoff's last three decades of public life, the papers include material that spans the whole range of his interests and accomplishments.

Title: Jacob Pat Papers Bulk, 1944-1960 1935-1978, (Bulk 1944-1960)

Jacob Pat was a journalist, writer and activist born in Bialystok, Russian Empire, in 1890. He served as the General Secretary of the Jewish Labor Bund's Central Association of Yiddish Schools in Warsaw, Poland in the years preceding World War II. A fund-raising trip in the fall of 1938 brought Jacob Pat to the United States where he was compelled to remain due to the war. He then devoted his efforts to anti-Nazi activity and rescue work and became the Executive Secretary of the Jewish Labor Comittee, a position he held until his retirement in 1963. He also served as a member of the Delegation of the Jewish Labor Bund to the U.S., and as a chairman of the Congress of Jewish Culture. These papers include correspondence, essays and writings, in particular, material pertaining to Pat's work with the Jewish Labor Committee.

The General Jewish Council was an umbrella organization founded by the American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, B’nai B’rith and Jewish Labor Committee in order to coordinate their rights defense activities. The bulk of the records in this collection date between 1938 and 1944, the active years of the Council. Materials consist primarily of correspondence, minutes, memoranda, and reports.

Title: Jewish Labor Committee (U.S.) Records, Part I: Holocaust Era Files 1934-1947

The Jewish Labor Committee, an umbrella group of Jewish or Jewish-led trade unions and fraternal organizations, was founded in New York City in 1934. Its primary purposes were to organize anti-Nazi and anti-fascist activity and to provide assistance to European Jews and others persecuted by these movements. During World War II, it maintained close ties with European resistance movements and was able to effect the rescue of hundreds of labor and socialist activists and their families. After the War, it helped to reunite families and resettle survivors. The original donation of JLC records to NYU included more than 800 linear feet of material. This guide describes the first portion of the JLC records; included are general administrative records for the Committee’s earliest years as well as files documenting anti-Nazi activity (including relations with other Jewish organizations), rescue and aid activities, and overseas work in general. Most documentation of the JLC’s domestic anti-discrimination work, which increased in intensity in the post-war years, is included in later series.
